Detroit hosts Milwaukee
tonight in Game 5 of their first-round NBA playoff series with a 3-1 lead. When the Pistons have had a chance to end a series since
the 2003 playoffs, they have won nine of their last 10 games — with the only
loss coming last year at San Antonio
in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. Drawing comparisons to how franchises have done in
previous years can be misleading for some teams and their changing faces. But
the Pistons are using four of the same starters for the fourth straight
postseason, and the other, Rasheed Wallace, is a
Piston in the playoffs for a third year in a row. Experience should be an edge
against a team with only one starter — Michael Redd —
that had played in a postseason game before this year. The Bucks plan to defend
Chauncey Billups with Redd, instead of T.J. Ford, after the All-Star point guard scored 24 of 34
points after halftime to lead Detroit
to a 109-99 victory Monday night. “We’re going to try to put a bigger guy on
him and have T.J. chase around Rip (Richard Hamilton)
a little bit more,” Redd said. Billups is leading Detroit
with 23.5 points per game in the playoffs.

Hamilton has
been easier to defend than he usually is because he’s slowed by a bruised thigh
and a sprained ankle. The shooting guard is averaging 16.8 points — down from
his career playoff average of 20.9 — on just 34.5 percent shooting. Detroit
coach Flip Saunders isn’t considering resting Hamilton.
“You can’t just shut guys down,” Saunders said. “It’s not that bad, really.”

Over the first 10 games of the season, the Dodgers offense
averaged 6.8 runs. Over the next 16 games, it averaged half that, 3.4. So
manager Grady Little said it was time for “a little
tinkering.” Here’s Little’s definition of tinkering:
Nobody from Monday night’s batting order returned in the same place on Tuesday
night against Arizona. Slumping
shortstop and leadoff hitter Rafael Furcal and center
fielder Kenny Lofton, who have batted first and second since Lofton returned
from a calf injury, swapped spots. J.D. Drew moved from No. 3 to cleanup,
slumping cleanup hitter Jeff Kent dropped to fifth and No. 5 hitter Nomar Garciaparra moved up to
third. Andre Ethier, called up to replace the
disabled Ricky Ledee, made his Major League debut in
left field batting sixth. Catcher Dioner Navarro, who
did not play on Monday night, hit eighth. And Oscar Robles batted seventh in
place of Bill Mueller, who was given the night off.

Pirates-Mets

Since becoming the first team in major league history to
build a five-game division lead after only 12 games,
the Mets won a franchise-record 16 games in April to open a six-game lead over
the rival Braves and Phillies. In fact, Baseball Prospectus’s adjusted playoff
odds report gives the Mets a 70% chance of winning the NL East and a 74% chance
of making the postseason, even at this early hour.

The loss
last night left the 13-12 Blue Jays with a 2-3 record on this seven-game trip. The
Red Sox’ game against the New York Yankees was rained
out last night, meaning the pitching matchup tonight, weather permitting, will
be Roy Halladay (3-1, 2.84 earned run average)
against the Red Sox’ Josh Beckett (3-1, 4.50). Josh Towers (0-5, 10.45) will pitch against
Matt Clement (2-2, 6.14) tomorrow night.

The
Orioles’ bullpen is a mess, too. After Monday’s 9-7 loss to the Blue Jays, in
which Toronto pounded out 16 hits, the club designated Jim
Brower for assignment and optioned Eddy Rodriguez, purchasing the contracts of
Julio Manon and Kurt Birkins
from Triple-A Ottawa. They are the 12^th and 13^th
different relievers used by the Orioles this season.

Jeff Weaver
returns to Comerica Park
to pitch tonight for the Angels. It was four years ago this July that Dave Dombrowski,
in his first big move as Tigers general manager, swapped Weaver to the Yankees.
This will be Weaver’s second start in Detroit
against the Tigers. The first came in 2003, when as a Yankee he lost to the
Tigers team that lost 119 games. Weaver has made one other start against the
Tigers—he beat them for the Dodgers in Los Angeles
last season.

Royals-Twins

The Twins went to Kansas City
last week hoping to right the ship. They won two of three games but didn’t play
well, and any momentum they hoped to gain was quickly quashed during the
weekend debacle in Detroit. So they’ll
try again against the majors’ worst team. The Twins’ lineup should be
salivating at the chance to face Mays, the former Twin who has lasted into the
sixth inning in only one of his five starts for his new team.

Neither team has won two in a row in the series, but the
Nets’ 97-88 win in Game 4 might prove to be a watershed game. The Nets’
attacking offense, led by Vince Carter, left Nenad Krstic wide-open for a 10-for-16 shooting performance.
Defensively, they held the Pacers to 6 of 18 in the first and third quarters,
got Jermaine O’Neal in foul trouble and slowed
Anthony Johnson (12 points) and Stephen Jackson (13 points).

One number the Nets and Pacers will be thinking about: In
the history of seven-game series that were tied at 2-2, the winner of Game 5
wins the series 83.6 percent of the time (107-21).

Bulls-Heat

Thanks to consecutive wins at the United
Center, the playoff series between
the Bulls and the favored Miami Heat is tied at 2-2. The scene shifts back to South
Florida for a pivotal Game 5 tonight at American Airlines Arena. Chandler’s
status is in doubt. He wore a walking boot on his right leg after landing
awkwardly and turning the ankle with about 30 seconds left in Sunday’s 93-87
victory. Even if Chandler decides
to play, it’s probably safe to assume he won’t be at full speed. So the Bulls
are expecting to find some alternate defenders for Heat center Shaquille
O’Neal, whose playing time was limited by foul trouble in Games 3 and 4.
Starter Michael Sweetney figures to get more minutes
if he can keep away from fouls. Malik Allen, Othella Harrington and rookie Luke Schenscher
are the other logical options. The Bulls have found success by spreading the
court and attacking Miami’s weak
perimeter defenders. That strategy helped create O’Neal’s foul problems because
the Bulls guards are finding free lanes to the basket. Skiles
identified turnovers as his team’s greatest concern. They had a combined 35 in
the first two games of the series, even though the Heat ranked 28^th
in the league this season in causing turnovers.

Kings-Spurs

From defensive
issues to offensive fixes, the Kings have seemingly righted their wrongs. After
allowing the Spurs to hit 23 three-pointers in the first two games, San Antonio
has hit just nine since the Kings made the perimeter a priority. The feared
byproduct was an explosion by Spurs forward Tim Duncan. But though he’s only
rarely being double-covered, Duncan has scored more than 17 points just once
(29 in Game 3), a credit to aggressive defense by Kenny Thomas, Brad Miller and
Shareef Abdur-Rahim. After forgetting the beating they took in Game 1, the
Kings seemed to remember how they won 26 of their final 40 regular-season games
– with defense and, in part, with the help of Brad Miller. They gave up a
combined 250 points in the first two games, only to return to the defensive
ways sparked by Ron Artest and allow 177 in the last two. Then, after being
pleased to learn that the Spurs have no answer for the offensive attacks of
Bonzi Wells, Artest and – at times – Abdur-Rahim, Miller returned to his old
self.

Lakers-Suns

The Phoenix Suns try stave off elimination tonight, as
they host the Los Angeles Lakers at US Airways Center in Game 5 of their
first-round series. The Lakers own a 3-1 lead in this best-of-seven series. The
Lakers have lost two straight Game 5s in the postseason. They have won 13 of
their last 14 contests when they have the chance to eliminate their opponent. Phoenix
has lost six of its last seven Game 5s in the playoffs. The Suns have lost four
of their last five outings when facing elimination. The Suns have never

NBA

NEW JERSEY -6’ Indiana

Indiana
forward Peja Stojakovic will likely miss Game 5 of the Pacers’ series against New
Jersey on Tuesday with a right knee injury.

”Probably I won’t be available,” Stojakovic said
after Monday’s practice. “My knee is still hurting. Hopefully we can get it
better.”

The timing couldn’t be worse for the Pacers, as Jermaine
O’Neal also missed most of Monday’s workout after becoming ill. The series with
the Nets is tied 2-2 and Indiana
needs a win to regain homecourt advantage.

”Every injury is difficult,” Stojakovic said. “It
came at a bad moment, the most important. I just have to deal with that and
hopefully, I’ll get better soon.”

Stojakovic, the Pacers’ second-leading scorer in the
regular season, is only averaging 11 points in the playoffs. But Indiana
is 2-0 in the games he has played and 0-2 when he’s been out.

Indiana has
72 turnovers in the series, 33 more than the Nets. But Rick Carlisle, the
Pacers coach is not the best at making adjustments.
