NFL

Here are news and notes from Godspicks.com private clipboard.  They are compiled from hometown newspapers
and the team’s own press releases.

Broncos-Rams

9News

The Rams have eight new starters, five on defense.  Linehan has had
much of the summer to check out the Broncos’ 13-3 season that concluded with a
17-point loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Steelers. The Rams will
probably never be better prepared this season, not that they’ve found any
glaring weaknesses. The Broncos have familiarity going for them—the same
systems on both sides of the ball and on special teams, and not much personnel
turnover. Quarterback Marc Bulger scoffs at the first-string offense’s
inability to score a touchdown in 11 preseason possessions, saying what counts
begins on Sunday. Bet the
NFL now at -107 juice! Check
out the latest odds at CanBet.

Denver Post

Last year, the Rams ranked 30th in overall
defense by allowing 350 yards per game and they were a safety away from tying Houston
for the league’s worst scoring defense. This year, new Rams coach Scott Linehan has made defensive improvement a top priority. To
accomplish this goal, Linehan not only overhauled the
defensive personnel but emphasized offensive balance. “I think their philosophy
on offense is a little bit different – they’re not throwing the ball every
down,” Shanahan said. Here’s a stat that may scare those thinking about placing
a soft drink on the Broncos for this game: The Rams are 38-0 in games in which
they have a 100-yard rusher since moving to St. Louis
in 1995. The Rams are 15-1 at home against AFC teams since 1998. No player from
either team was listed as doubtful or out for the game Sunday. Broncos defensive end Courtney Brown (knee) is the only
player listed as questionable. Check out the approved sportsbooks at www.linetrackers.com

Jets-Titans

SiLive

Jeff Fisher is the second-longest tenured coach in the NFL
behind only Pittsburgh’s Bill
Cowher, but he is busy rebuilding a franchise after two awful seasons. He is
21-5 against teams making a first visit to Nashville.
Fisher still hasn’t selected a starting quarterback. All signs point to Kerry
Collins, the 11-year veteran signed on Aug. 29, taking the field first for the
Titans instead of Billy Volek. Rookie Vince Young,
the No. 3 overall draft pick out of Texas,
is expected to see spot duty on a series or two as a change-up. The Jets’
biggest challenge may be protecting Pennington in his first game since he hurt
his throwing shoulder Sept. 25 in a loss to Jacksonville.
The offensive line features a pair of rookies in left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson and center Nick Mangold,
who replaces Mawae. Pennington said he isn’t worried,
even though New York allowed 53
sacks in 2005.  The Titans have grown up
a bit from the team that started seven rookies in 2005, including both
cornerbacks. They added experience and speed to a defense that gave up more
points than all but three other teams by signing safety Chris Hope away from Pittsburgh
and linebacker David Thornton from the Colts. They got better this week by
signing six-year veteran tackle Robaire Smith. But
the Titans remain young, and Mawae said that’s what
makes a strong start so important. Bet now through Nine. Check
out the latest odds.

Bengals-Chiefs

Cincinnati Enquirer

The Bengals were 6-2 away from home last season and have
won seven of nine on the road. Kansas City,
which the Bengals will play Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium, is one of the NFL’s
best home teams. In the past four seasons, the Chiefs are 25-7 at home, tied
for the second-best mark in the league with Denver
and behind only New England (26-6).  The Bengals lost 37-3 on Jan. 1 at Kansas
City
. Lewis played regulars only sparingly and rested
others who were coping with minor injuries.

Carson Palmer played just a couple of series at
quarterback against the Chiefs. Linebacker David Pollack (hamstring) and
cornerback Deltha O’Neal (knee) are questionable for
the opener Sunday at Kansas City. Pollack
practiced Wednesday afternoon, but O’Neal did not.If
O’Neal can’t play, rookie Johnathan Joseph will
start, Lewis said.If Pollack is limited, NFL rookie Rashad Jeanty – a three-year
Canadian Football League veteran – probably will go. Jeanty
started at strong-side linebacker in the preseason when Pollack was out. Wide
receiver Antonio Chatman (groin) is out. Wide receiver T.J.
Houshmandzadeh (heel), defensive tackle Sam Adams
(knee) and linebacker Ahmad Brooks (neck) were listed on the Bengals’ injury
report as probable for Kansas City.
Adams and Houshmandzadeh did not practice. Brooks
did.  Bet now through Nine. Check out the latest odds.

Seahawks-Lions

TSN

Seahawks starting outside linebacker Leroy Hill was added
to the team’s injury list Thursday as questionable for Sunday’s season opener
at Detroit. Hill, a third-round
draft choice in 2005 from Clemson who set a Seattle
rookie record with 7½ sacks, injured his left shoulder early in Wednesday’s
full-pads practice. D.D. Lewis would start against
the Lions if Hill does not. Lewis, an undrafted free
agent signed in 2002, started 12 games last season before Hill’s emergence.

Seattle Post Intelligencer

It’s simply the first of 16 games, but the Seahawks are
hoping to start fast and close strong to reverse the recent trend for teams
coming off losses in the Super Bowl. The previous five runner-up teams – Philadelphia,
Carolina, Oakland,
St. Louis and the New York Giants –
all failed to make the playoffs the following season, none reached. 500 and the
teams combined for a 31-49 record. The Lions, an NFL-worst 21-59 since 2001,
are hopeful that those expecting another awful season are wrong. Seattle
will look similar on offense this year, but it did lose All-Pro guard Steve
Hutchinson in free agency. Hasselbeck, MVP running back Shaun Alexander,
receiver Darrell Jackson – coming off another knee surgery – and Pro Bowl
tackle Walter Jones are back after helping Seattle
score a league-high 452 points last season. Seattle
has won an NFC-high 32 games since 2003 and is coming off a conference
championship.  Bet this game now through BetUs. Check out the

Falcons-Panthers

Charlotte Observer

With the hamstring pull and ingrown toenail that forced
him to miss much of training camp and the entire preseason behind him, Panthers
receiver Steve Smith has had a setback.

Smith sat out Wednesday’s practice after slightly hurting
his other hamstring in Tuesday’s practice, coach John Fox said. Although Smith
has missed significant practice time, teammates said they don’t think he will
be rusty when the regular season starts. Bet the NFL now at -107 juice! Check out the latest odds at CanBet.

ABC7

The Atlanta
Falcons will be forced to shuffle their linebacking corps due to the injury to
Ed Hartwell. It isn’t the preferred method of attempting to slow an opponent
which rushed for 371 yards in two divisional meetings in 2005, but the Atlanta
Falcons, who will be forced to shuffle their linebacker corps for Sunday’s
season-opener against the Carolina Panthers, are at least accustomed to the
drill. With starting middle linebacker Ed Hartwell still sidelined as he
continues to recover from arthroscopic surgery to remove debris from both knees
two weeks ago, weakside star and five-time Pro Bowl performer Keith Brooking
will slide into the “Mike” spot. Third-year veteran Demorrio Williams, the team’s
leading tackler in 2005 but relegated to nickel responsibilities this season,
rejoins the starting lineup. And second-year veteran Michael Boley, who started
11 games as a rookie, is the strongside linebacker. It’s a starting combination
the Falcons employed in 11 games in 2005, after Hartwell was lost for the year
to a ruptured Achilles tendon.
Bet this game now through BetUs. Check out the
lines now

Cowboys-Jaguars

Associated Press

The Cowboys, coming off a 9-7 season in which they missed
the playoffs, have added Terrell Owens to catch touchdown passes and Mike Vanderjagt to kick field goals. Plus, this team will be
anchored by a defense that was dominating in four preseason games.  Under Del Rio,
who is in his first head coaching job, the Jaguars are 26-22. That’s one
victory more than the Cowboys have under Parcells. Both lost their only playoff
games with their current teams, Parcells at the end of his first season and Del
Rio
last year after Jacksonville
went 12-4 during the regular season.
Cowboys Julius Jones averaged only 2.3 yards per carry and gained 97
yards in four preseason games.

Jones ran for 993 yards last season, when he missed three
games because of an ankle injury. He also missed eight games as a rookie in
2004 because of injury, but isn’t worried about the past.  The Jaguars (8-3, .727) are the only team
with a better winning percentage in season openers than Dallas (31-14-1, .689).  Bet now through Nine. Check
out the latest odds.

Stevie Vincent of OffshoreInsiders.com

Jacksonville’s
top three receivers are 6-4, while Dallas
DBs are 6-1 and two at 5-11. Look for 6-4 Reggie
Williams to be thrown to often.

Bears-Packers

Associated Press

Mike Stock figures the Chicago Bears might consider the
Green Bay Packers’ special teams vulnerable going into
Sunday’s season opener at Lambeau Field. The Packers, after all, have a rookie
punter in Jon Ryan, and rookie punters can be susceptible to blocked punts. And
after watching the way the Packers tried to cover punt returns in their final
preseason game against Tennessee,
the Bears might instead be tempted to try to set up rookie punt returner Devin Hester for long gains.

Hester averaged 22.8 yards in the preseason, and might be
salivating at the thought of facing a Packers coverage team that allowed an
average of 20.6 yards per punt return against Tennessee
last Friday.  Bet the NFL now at -107 juice! Check out the latest odds at CanBet.

Suburban Chicago News

The Bears aren’t totally sold themselves on their
receivers because they continue trying to pursue other receivers despite having
six on the roster. They worked out free agent waiver wire victims Rod Gardner,
Darius Watts and Greg Lee Tuesday without signing any. Apparently Bernard Berrian will get first crack at teaming up with Muhsin Muhammad in the starting lineup as Bears receivers
try to improve their stature league-wide. Berrian,
listed as the Bears’ second starting wide receiver, practiced and was removed
from the injury list on Wednesday following a sore knee that kept him out of
the preseason finale. The Bears listed eight players questionable on their
first injury report of the season, including defensive starters Mike Brown
(Achilles) and Alex Brown (shoulder). Running back Cedric Benson (shoulder),
wide receiver Mark Bradley (hip), wide receiver Justin Gage (rib), defensive
end Israel Idonije (ankle), tight end Gabe Reid (back) and fullback J.D. Runnels (ankle) are also
questionable. Bears receiver Airese Currie, who had
been out with a sore knee, returned to practice and was removed from the injury
list. Gage, Idonije and Reid were the only Bears who
missed practice Wednesday. The Packers list cornerback Will Blackmon (foot)
doubtful, tackle Junius Coston
(knee) out and fullback William Henderson (knee) questionable.  Bet now through Nine. Check
out the latest odds.

NFL

CINCINNATI +2 Kansas
City

KC has gone from one of the best head coaches in the
league to one of the worst.  Hiring
Herman Edwards makes no sense at all the Chiefs will pay. Larry Johnson says
the Bengals have bitter memories from last year. KC held a 30-3 lead in the
final three minutes but still chucking passes into the end zone, and hitting
one.

“It left a bad taste in our mouth,” said Johnson. “Nobody’s
forgotten that game.” Now eight months later and buoyed by Carson Palmer’s
remarkable recovery from reconstructive knee surgery, the Bengals will open the
season Sunday in the very stadium and against the very team that mauled them
37-3 in last year’s regular-season finale.

The Chiefs had already been shut out of the playoffs
because of Pittsburgh’s victory
that day over Detroit. But in Dick
Vermeil’s final game as head coach, they wanted to see Trent Green get 4,000
yards passing and Larry Johnson erase the team rushing record. So they kept
pouring on the fire and, at the Bengals’ expense, both did. Green’s 4,014 yards
made him the fourth quarterback in NFL history to post three consecutive
4,000-yard seasons. Johnson had 201 yards and three TDs
and a team-record 1,750 yards.

“We’ve had this game marked on our calendar for a year,”
said Johnson. “We’re looking forward to going out there and putting on a great
show.” The Bengals, for the third straight year, also return every offensive
starter. Acquisitions of massive defensive tackle Sam Adams and safety Dexter
Jackson could strengthen a defense that gave up almost 400 yards a game.

Our research shows there is little correlation between how
a team does in the preseason and how they do during the regular season, though
it has some benefit to seeing how teams will do on opening day.  Hence the fact Cincinnati
won all four preseason games is a good sign. Let everyone tell you how great KC
is at home.  The fact is they’ve lost
four of their last six home openers SU.
