NFL

Broncos-Chargers

ESPN

Left defensive end Luis Castillo, who missed the past four
games with an ankle injury, will be back on the field for Sunday’s home game
against the Denver Broncos. Last week, the Chargers got linebacker Shawne Merriman back in the lineup following a four-game
suspension for a violation of the league’s steroids and banned substances
policy. Joe Duffy’s sports betting selections are at www.GodsTips.com

Giants-Panthers

ESPN

Carolina
quarterback Jake Delhomme did not practice for a third straight day Friday with
a right thumb injury, making it more likely Chris Weinke
will start for the Panthers. Weinke, a former Heisman
Trophy winner, has thrown only 13 passes in four seasons and hasn’t been a
full-time starter since 2001 when the Panthers were 1-15. The Panthers only
have two quarterbacks on the active roster. If Delhomme can’t play, they are
expected to promote rookie Brett Basanez from the
practice squad. Stevie Vincent’s BetOnSports360.com

Eagles-Redskins

Washington Times

Lost in the
midst of Washington’s near-elimination from the playoff race with last Sunday’s
loss to Atlanta was receiver Santana Moss’ return to the form that made him a
Pro Bowl starter last season. After battling a strained hamstring for five
weeks, Moss showed he was back on his initial catch. Moss, who was hurt in an
Oct. 22 loss to Indianapolis, had seven catches for 123 yards against Atlanta.
Despite missing games against Dallas (Nov. 5) and Tampa Bay (Nov. 19) and being
a non-factor against Carolina and at Philadelphia (Nov. 12), Moss still leads
the Redskins with 41 catches. The Eagles, who visit the Redskins tomorrow, have
perhaps the NFL’s top secondary. But they didn’t see the real Moss last time
when he came back too soon from the hamstring injury and caught just three
balls for 17 yards. Offensive tackle Jon Jansen, who has been bothered for
weeks by a strained calf, and reserve tight end Todd Yoder, who injured a thigh
last Sunday against Atlanta, both returned to practice yesterday meaning that
coach Joe Gibbs can choose from the full 53-man roster for the first time all
season. MasterLockLine.com has the top plays from the top sports service
in their highest ranked sports.

Brian Westbrook
has averaged 148 yards of offense the past four games, keeping the Eagles (6-6)
in the NFC playoff race despite the loss of quarterback Donovan McNabb, their
longtime focal point, to a season-ending knee injury. Westbrook averaged just 13.3
carries as the No. 1 back in 2004 and 2005 and just 13.9 in Philadelphia’s 4-4
start this season. However, he has 80 carries in the past four games with a
superb 5.1 yards a carry.

Patriots-Dolphins

Boston Herald

The Patriots
are fighting for one of the top two playoff seeds in the AFC. The Dolphins
would like nothing more than to play the role of spoilers. They’ve had plenty
of practice. Miami claimed December victories over the Patriots in 2004 and
2005. Quarterback Tom Brady so invincible against virtually the rest of the
NFL, is a mortal 7-4 against the Dolphins. Joe Duffy’s sports betting
selections are at www.GodsTips.com

Bills-Jets

NY Post

J.P. Losman passed for 328 yards
on Sept. 24, when the Jets beat the Bills, 28-20, in Orchard
Park
. Since that first game against
Buffalo, one quarterback has passed
for more than 300 yards against the Jets: David Carr of the Texans, in a 26-11
Jets’ win. Carr threw the ball 59 times. Approved sportsbooks are at www.linetrackers.com

Colts-Jaguars

Indy Star

Through 13 weeks of the NFL season, the Indianapolis Colts
are 10-2, coming off a pair of road losses in their past three games and trying
to fix a defense that ranks last in the league against the run.

Xavier-Creighton

Press Notes

Xavier, 7-1, won its fourth straight game with an 88-55
thrashing of former Midwestern Collegiate Conference rival Detroit
on Tuesday in Throwback Jersey Night at Cintas Center.
Xavier shot a season-high 59.3 percent from the field in the win over Detroit,
marking the fourth straight game that Xavier has shot over 50.0 percent from
the field. This is the first time XU has shot 50 percent or better in four
straight games since the 2003-04 “Elite Eight” season. Xavier is ranked 24th
in this week’s Associated Press Poll. The last time Xavier was ranked in the
Associated Press “Top 25” was when it finished 12th in the 2002-03
final regular season poll. XU was ranked as high as 10th that season
by AP, including the preseason poll and the March 5th poll. Xavier, which played VCU, Villanova and Alabama
at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands, tonight is playing its first
road game on an opponent’s home court. Joe Duffy’s sports betting selections

Illinois Chicago-Illinois

Press Notes

The UIC men’s basketball team
renews its rivalry with Illinois on Saturday afternoon as the Flames (5-4)
square off with the Fighting Illini (8-2) at the
United Center at 1 p.m. UIC enters the contest riding
a three-game winning streak and has won four of its last five games. Saturday’s
matinee is the 13th all-time meeting between UIC
and Illinois with the Illini holding an 11-1 edge in the series. This is the
second time the two schools have squared off at the United
Center
with Illinois
winning the last meeting in the arena, 75-60, on Dec. 30, 2003. The Flames are on the heels of a
convincing 71-48 win at Northern Illinois on Tuesday night.
UIC’s defense has been especially stingy of late,
limiting opponents to just 38 percent field goal shooting in
its last three games
. UIC’s recent surge has
coincided with the insertion of freshman Spencer Stewart into the starting
lineup. The rookie point guard is averaging 10.0 points and 5.2 assists per
outing and shooting 50 percent from three-point range as a starter. Stewart is
now the team leader in assists (3.3 apg) and ranks
first in the Horizon League in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.3-to-1).

GA Tech-Vanderbilt

Press Notes

Tech is 2-2 away from home this season, having defeated
Purdue (79-61) and No. 11 Memphis (92-85) before dropping an 88-73 decision to
No. 5 UCLA in the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational. The Yellow Jackets are 20-48 on
the road overall under head coach Paul Hewitt. The Yellow Jackets remain No. 2
in the ACC in scoring offense (86.1 ppg), lead the ACC in field goal percentage
(51.4 pct.) and rank second in three-point field foal percentage (39.0 pct.). MasterLockLine.com has the top plays from the top
sports service in their highest ranked sports.
Tech also ranks
sixth in rebound margin (plus-5.9), fifth in assists per game (16.5) and fifth
in offensive rebounds (14.5). Defensively, Tech has struggled in its last three
games, allowing its opponents to shoot no worse than 51.7 percent in any one
half. And the Jackets have been outrebounded for
three straight games after beating its first five opponents on the boards by an
average of more than 12 per game. The Yellow Jackets will be tested Saturday by
a team that relies heavily on good three-point shooting.

UCLA-Texas A&M

LA Times

That No. 6 ranking is the highest in Texas A&M history, but it came before the Aggies
suffered their first loss of the season Tuesday at No. 9 Louisiana State.

Indiana-Kentucky

Courier-Journal

Last season in Indianapolis,
IU handed the Cats their worst loss in series
history, a 79-53 shellacking that snapped UK’s
five-game winning streak in the series. The Hoosiers are coming off a 92-40 win
against Western Illinois.

Utah-Rhode Island

Press Notes

Utah had its
three-game winning steak snapped with a 60-57 loss at Utah
State
on Wednesday night. Last
week, the Utes defeated Weber State, 67-55, on Nov. 29 and previously unbeaten
Washington State, 69-55, on Dec. 2. Three of Utah’s
four losses have come by a combined seven points. Before its loss at Utah
State
on Wednesday night, Utah
had won three in a row for the first time since it won its first four games of
the 2005-06 season. That followed up Utah’s
first 0-3 start since 1970-71. The Utes have shot at least 50 percent from
three-point range in five of the seven games and at least 50 percent from the
field in five of the seven games this season. The Rams are 5-4 overall and 3-1
at home this season. During the past week, Rhode Island
lost at Providence, 95-66, on
Saturday and edged Brown, 72-68, at home on Tuesday night.

Illinois State-Evansville

Press Notes

The Aces have won four straight at Roberts Stadium against
Illinois State
and Indiana State.
That’s the longest homecourt win streak for UE
against MVC opponents. Overall, Evansville
trails in the series against Illinois
State
20-12. The Aces were 2-1
against the Redbirds last season–winning at home 54-47, losing at Normal
65-57, and winning 52-45 in the first round of the State Farm MVC Tournament. Evansville
has won four straight home games after defeating Valparaiso
69-64 at Roberts Stadium on Tuesday behind Matt Webster’s career-high 30
points. This is the Aces’ longest homecourt win streak since they won eight in
a row at home to begin the 2004-05 season. peaking of winning
streaks, Illinois State
has run off six straight after two losses to begin the season. The Redbirds
present a much different look in 2006-07, with three junior college transfers
leading the team in scoring. Stevie Vincent’s BetOnSports360.com is pioneer in forensic
handicapping and part of OffshoreInsiders.com
Guards Dominitrix
Johnson (12.9) and Boo Richardson (12.8) are the top scorers, and 6-7 forward
Anthony Slack (11.5 ppg, 7.8 rpg) is third in scoring and first in rebounding.
The Redbirds are 6-2 overall after Tuesday’s 64-40 win over Miami of Ohio.

Butler-Indiana State

Press Notes

Butler (9-0)
will play outside of Indianapolis
for the final time before Christmas when it visits Indiana
State
(4-3). Indiana
State
, ending a seven-day layoff,
has won the last two meetings in the series, including a 59-58 decision at
Hinkle Fieldhouse last year. The #15-ranked Bulldogs
defeated Ball State, 65-41, on Wednesday (Dec. 6), recording their fourth
victory over a school from Indiana
this season. Butler continues to
hold the No. 1 spot in the Ratings Percentage Index (RPI)
and the Bulldogs have climbed to the top spot in the Sagarin basketball
ratings. It marks the first time that Butler
has held the top spot in both national ratings at the same time! Butler
first grabbed the top spot in the RPI after beating
Notre Dame and Indiana on back-to-back nights in early November. The Bulldogs
have played the seventh toughest schedule in the nation acccording
to the RPI.

West Virginia-Duquesne

Press Notes

Duquesne (2-5), coming off a 73-56 loss at #2 (AP) Pitt on
Wednesday, completes its own version of “rivalry week” by hosting West Virginia.Duquesne’s current stretch of three local rivals
in a week began with a 73-72 loss at Robert Morris last Saturday. The West
Virginia
game is Duquesne’s lone home game between Nov.
22 and Jan. 10. The Dukes, who dropped a 67-53 decision to Oakland
on Nov. 22, won’t play at home after the WVU game
until conference play when La Salle visits on Jan. 10.
That’s eight of nine on the road if you’re counting. Six of the past eight Duquesne
vs. West Virginia games have been
single-digit affairs with Duquesne winning four times. The past four games at
Duquesne have been decided by fewer than 10 points with the teams alternating
wins. Approved
sportsbooks are at
www.linetrackers.com The Dukes received a lift when 6-10 junior F/C
Kieron Achara played 18
minutes at Pitt on Wednesday. Achara, who missed all
but three games last season with a torn labrum in his left shoulder, was
diagnosed with three stress fractures in his left foot on Nov. 10. Hhe resumed practice on Monday, Dec. 4 and was a surprise
addition for the Pitt game. It was Achara’s first
game action since last Dec. 3 vs. Robert Morris (he underwent shoulder surgery
last Dec. 15). Duquesne is currently competing with nine scholarship players. A
freshman has led DU in scoring in each of the team’s
first seven games.

OHIO +14.5 Louisville

Louisville is
certainly vulnerable as their 2-2 mark shows.
The best team they’ve beaten all year is Northwestern
State
. The Cards have not even
played a road game this year (two neutral), which makes their .500 record even
more despicable.

Regardless, there is no panic in Louisville
as they are still in a prepare-for-the-big-boys mode. They have 10 games in the
next 22 days, all at home. Louisville
has had their share of injuries and a big suspension, so no surprise continuity
is a problem.

Ohio is
quick, which will pose problems for the Cards. Pitino said the Mid-American
Conference team is very similar to Dayton,
which beat UofL 68-64 a week ago .

rivals. Coach Steve Alford, including a 54-5 (.915) mark in non-conference home
games. Two of the four non-conference home losses game in the National
Invitation Tournament. Iowa holds
a 40-19 advantage in the series. Iowa
has won four of the last seven meetings and six of the last 10. Just seven of
the last 17 games have had a final margin of eight points or less. The visiting
team has won seven of the last 13 meetings. Iowa
holds a 24-5 advantage in games played in Iowa City,
including an 8-4 mark in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Iowa
State
’s last win in Iowa
City
was a 73-69 decision in December, 2002. Iowa’s
all-time record against current members of the Big 12 Conference is 87-47,
including losses to Texas (68-59)
and Iowa State
last season.

Iowa State
is 47-89 all-time against current members of the Big Ten Conference, including
a 68-63 win at Minnesota earlier
this season. Senior guard Mike Henderson, who missed Iowa’s
first seven games after suffering a hand injury in practice on Oct. 30, saw his
first action of the season in Iowa’s
win over Coppin
State
. Henderson
suffered a fracture to the pinkie finger on his right hand and underwent
surgery two days later. Henderson
had the cast removed Nov. 27 before playing eight minutes vs. Coppin State
and 11 minutes vs. Northern Iowa. Henderson
(6-3, 200), a Waterloo, IA
native, started all 34 games a year ago. He averaged 7.6 points and 3.9
rebounds per outing while shooting 46.4% from three-point range. He earned the
team “Most Improved Award” at the conclusion of the season.

Eastern Michigan-San Diego

Press Notes

Sand Diego’s Nir Cohen, a
6-foot-7, 245-pound senior forward/center from Israel,
will be sidelined for an estimated four to six weeks after suffering a fracture
to the third metacarpal (middle finger) in his left hand. The injury occurred
in the afternoon shootaround before the Point Loma
game on Nov. 16th during a defensive drill against the scout team
running the PLNU offense. Cohen said he was hit by a
teammate’s elbow. Through two games Cohen was averaging 14.5 ppg and 4.5 rpg while shooting 60% from the field and 76.9 percent from
the free throw line. The USD Toreros won their second
straight game with Tuesday’s 92-72 home win over the Cal State Bakersfield. The
win also improved USD’s home record this season to a
perfect 3-0. USD will be gunning for its third
straight win and second straight road victory when they tip-off against the Eastern Michigan Eagles on
Friday.
The EWU Eagles are off to a 1-5 start
and bring a 4-game losing streak to the tourney. This past Tuesday they dropped
a 66-54 home decision to Oakland.
Prior to that they dropped road contests to Michigan

ANOTHER PRIME TIME NFL WINNER FROM NFL SPECIALIST

There are more than 600 services trying to sell sports
picks. There are less than a dozen that
are competent at it. No handicapper dominates any sport the way Joe Duffy’s
GodsTips does the NFL. This is a simple indisputable fact. We have dominated
the NFL Network much like we have MNF.

Thanksgiving it was a Wise Guy on Kansas

Cleveland-Pittsburgh plus two TNT NBA winners and the ESPN Alabama-Notre Dame
side. You get the all of today’s Joe Duffy’s

LONG BEACH STATE -6 Pepperdine

The Long Beach State
men’s basketball team will play its first home game in a day short of three
weeks. They will get an additional lift tonight. Senior guard Kejuan Johnson missed three games
after his broken nose was set on Nov. 27 but is expected to return to action
tonight.

The Waves are playing with a roster that includes just
eight scholarship players after sophomores Mike Gerrity and Chris Oakes quit, and Jason Walberg (who
transferred from Saint Mary’s to play for his father as a senior) suffered torn
knee ligaments last week.

Long Beach
will be better for the wear having played just one home game, four road,
including USC, UCLA and Temple and
two neutral contests.

JoeDuffy.net

Associated Press

Steelers, winners of the last six, have taken control by
beating the Browns 20 times in 25 games since coach Bill Cowher took over in
1992. The Browns haven’t won successive games since Oct. 5-12, 2003, a span of 54 games. The Steelers
traditionally thrive at this time of year – since 2001, they are 21-5 in
regular-season games played on Dec. 1 or later. And it was this week a year ago
when they began the eight-game winning streak that carried them to their first
Super Bowl title in 26 years.

NBA

Suns-Nets

NY Times

The Nets, who have only one victory against a team above
.500, will have a chance to take a huge stride in the right direction Thursday
when they play host to the Phoenix Suns (10-6).
Seven of the Nets’ defeats have come against teams with a sub-.500
record. The Nets lost six in a row earlier in the season, and they broke the
skid with victories over two of their lowly Atlantic Division foes, the Boston
Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers.
Joe Duffy’s sports betting selections are at www.GodsTips.com

NY Sun

With Stoudemire back, some
observers began forecasting 70 wins for the Suns. Then the Suns began the
season by losing five of six, and cooler heads began to remind people that Stoudemire might take a couple of months to return to his
old form, which included a 26 points per game, 8.9 rebounds a game season in
2005 and Rookie of the Year honors in 2003. Since their sluggish start, the
Suns, who visit the Meadowlands tonight, have been on a tear. They’ve won nine
out of 10 and during the last two weeks.

CBB

Alabama-Notre Dame

Press Register

Fourth-ranked Alabama
will face the sternest test yet to its unblemished record tonight when it takes
on Notre Dame at the Joyce Center
in South Bend, Ind.
The Crimson Tide (7-0) tips off against the unranked Irish (6-1). Alabama
has more than its ranking to defend. Its pride took a
hit in last year’s game against the Irish, when Colin
Falls
nailed seven 3-pointers and
led Notre Dame to a 78-71 win at Coleman Coliseum. As was the case in last year’s
game, Tide point guard Ron Steele will not be 100 percent healthy. Steele’s
back was tightening up on him in the Irish upset last year, and this time
tendonitis in his right knee will affect his play. Notre Dame is coming off an
impressive 81-74 win over then-No. 23 Maryland
in Washington, D.C.,
and has a chance to make another big statement against the Tide. Alabama
has stumbled around a bit in sweeping its last three at home against subpar competition. Steele did not play in two of those
games, then was pushed to 35 minutes in last Saturday’s
78-60 win over Tennessee State.
Stevie Vincent’s BetOnSports360.com is

Austin Peay-Morehead State

Leaf Chronicle

The Govs have won their last six over Morehead
State
. Austin Peay
views the entire weekend as a dangerous journey. After playing Morehead
State
, the Govs head down to play Eastern
Kentucky
on Saturday. They don’t call this part of the Ohio Valley
Conference swing a trip to “Death Valley” for nothing.
The Govs are riding high after knocking off a Tennessee Tech team that was
picked to finish third in the OVC, three spots higher
that Austin Peay. They snapped a three-game series
losing streak there. MasterLockLine.com has the top plays from the top
sports service in their highest ranked sports.

Eastern Illinois-Tennessee Tech

Journal Gazette

Yes, Tennessee Tech has beaten last season’s NCAA Sweet
16, Kansas-conquering Bradley. Yeah, the Golden Eagles beat the now 6-3 Bradley
team that won by 20 over a DePaul team that won by 30 over Eastern
Illinois
this season. But when it comes to the
earlier-than-ever-starting Ohio Valley Conference basketball race, Eastern and
Tech are dead even at 0-1. And when it comes to momentum, an EIU team predicted to finish ninth in the 11-team OVC might be running ahead of the No. 3 pick Eagles. While
the Panthers after a 53-50 near-upset loss to defending champion Murray State
used Mike Robinson’s last-second 40-footer to beat Arkansas State 73-70 on
Saturday, Tech was brought back down to earth from its conquest of Bradley when
it lost its OVC opener at Austin Peay
77-70. We see whether Tech, 3-3 for the season, has recharged with four days
without a game or is on a downward spiral. Having taken Tech into overtime last
season in a game that dropped the Panthers to 0-5 in a 6-21
season,
Eastern should have confidence in that it is considerably ahead
of last year’s pace. Joe Duffy’s sports betting selections are at www.GodsTips.com

Pepperdine-Long Beach State

Press Telegram

The Long Beach State
men’s basketball team will play its first home game in a day short of three weeks
tonight when the Pepperdine Waves visit the Walter
Pyramid for a 7:05 nonconference meeting. During the extended “road trip,” the
49ers (3-4) lost three times by an average margin of 24 points (to USC, UCLA
and Temple) before rallying Sunday to beat the University of Maryland-Baltimore
County, 57-53. Senior guard Kejuan Johnson missed
three games after his broken nose was set on Nov. 27 but is expected to return
to action tonight. The Waves, who were projected to finish seventh (among eight
teams) in the West Coast Conference by WCC head
coaches, improved to 2-6 Monday night with a 78-72 victory in Boulder against
the University of Colorado Buffaloes. Three of their losses have come to three
of Long Beach’s fellow Big West Conference members, Cal State Northridge
(95-92), UC Santa Barbara (89-80 in overtime) and UC Irvine (68-66), all played within a stretch of eight
days in late November. The Waves, who are scoring 79.6 points per game, are
playing with a roster that includes just eight scholarship players after
sophomores Mike Gerrity (a Mater Dei High graduate)
and Chris Oakes quit, and Jason Walberg (who transferred from Saint Mary’s to
play for his father as a senior) suffered torn knee ligaments last week.

Betting the Bowls Greatest Hits

We have written many bowl articles over the years that have led to big winnings at the expense of the books.  Here are some of the most important elements to remember and what separates the top sports handicappers from the absolute squares.

The Dictionary as a Handicapping Tool: For whatever reason unbeknownst to sharp players, so many gamblers put too high a price on road record in picking games on a neutral field.  A neutral game is just that—no more a road game than a home game.

Ticket Sales: We do pay close attention to how much of their allotments a team sells of their tickets.  However, it’s not just for what many would consider the obvious reason—which team could have more of a “12th man” cheering section.

One of the keys for a handicapper is to distinguish which teams are merely in a consolation game and which consider their postseason contest to be significant. Years of study has shown us it’s rare when a bowl is big for the fans but not for the players and visa versa. This is especially so when ticket sale discrepancies are not explained by each team’s proximity to where the game is being played.

So in short, unless a bowl is essentially a geographic home game for one squad, if one team sold 20,000 tickets and the other 4,000, it’s a strong sign the game is much more important to the former school.

Long Layoffs: Another myth is the proverbial “go with the team that enters the preseason hotter”. The long layoff hurts teams that had momentum going and gives squads that finished on a skid time to make adjustments.

Leave Conference Bowl Records for the Media: Don’t go too overboard looking at early bowl conference performances when handicapping the later bowls. Quality of competition, low sample size and so many other factors go into which conference is 3-0 and which is 0-3 in bowl games.  Don’t overlook all other factors and assume how one or two teams from a conference does early is more accurate than full season strength of schedule ratings.

If anything, the bowls have a few more “don’ts” for the postseason as the bowls bring out some of gambling’s top myths.  But for the most part, everything that works in the regular season applies in the postseason with some adjustments made for the so-called intangible factors.

Power ratings we use are adjusted as bowl season goes on.  However proper, not reactionary changes are made.

Roller Coaster 24 Hours For Dodgers

Roller-coaster 24 Hours For Dodgers

Baseball’s winter meetings in Orlando this week got off to a bad start for the reigning National League West champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

In the span of a few hours on Tuesday, 2006 Dodgers J.D. Drew, Julio Lugo and Greg Maddux signed with other teams (Drew and Lugo with Boston, Maddux with the Padres). So things weren’t looking too good in Chavez Ravine.

However, L.A. rallied nicely on Wednesday, signing potential No. 1 starter Jason Schmidt away from the archrival Giants for 3 years and $47 million. Schmidt was 11-9 with a 3.59 ERA in 213 1/3 innings last season for San Francisco. He will turn 34 before spring training, however. The Dodgers won a bidding war that included the Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals.

The 2007 Dodger rotation now likely will look like this: Schmidt, Derek Lowe, Brad Penny, Randy Wolf and a fifth starter from among Hong-Chih Kuo, Mark Hendrickson or Brett Tomko.

Los Angeles may not be done, as free agent outfielder Luis Gonzalez is likely to be signed, with a trade for Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez a distant possibility. L.A. is expected to be bidding against St. Louis and Baltimore for Gonzalez, but it is thought the former Diamondback wants to remain in the NL West.

By adding Schmidt, as well as earlier signing outfielder Juan Pierre and Wolf, Los Angeles figures to be the early favorite on WagerWeb.com to again win the NL West, but unless Los Angeles adds a big bat, the Dodgers could go one series and out in the playoffs again.

SEC Basketball Notebook

Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl is a media favorite most of the time, a walking quote sheet in a nice suit who never shies away from a microphone or camera.

So when he bristled at a television reporter earlier this fall, you knew something was up.

The source of Pearl’s angst was a question that implied the Memphis basketball program was the state’s best. Pearl deftly avoided an answer, but he won’t have to tonight when the 16th-ranked Tigers invade Thompson-Boling Arena.

Memphis topped the Vols last season, 88-79, in the first game of a 17-game series after a four-year hiatus. By season’s end, both teams were among the nation’s best with the Tigers gaining a No. 1 NCAA Tournament seed and Tennessee a No. 2.

Both teams look much different this year, though. This is a perfect chance for the revamped Vols to make a statement with three straight non-conference games looming in the next few weeks: Western Kentucky in Knoxville, vs. Oklahoma State in Nashville and then back home against Texas.

Junior guard Chris Lofton is Tennessee’s leader with 18.6 points a game (second in the SEC) and 3.8 3-pointers made per contest. Lofton is lapping the field in 3-pointers made (30) and attempted (62), and has teamed with senior Dane Bradshaw (7.4 points, 4.6 assists per game) to give the Volunteers a steady backcourt presence.

The tempo should be revved up tonight, as UT is forcing 23.8 turnovers a game (most in the SEC) and has pestered seven opponents into 20 giveaways or more. Memphis foes have coughed the ball up just over 20 times a game, and the Tigers aren’t shy about launching from 3-point range, with nearly 40 percent of their field-goal attempts coming from outside the arc.

Memphis is a 1-point favorite on WagerWeb.com, and that seems about right since 13 of the previous 17 games between the Tigers and Vols have been decided by 10 points or less.

MISSISSIPPI STATE: It turns out the younger half of the Hansbrough brother basketball tandem isn’t bad, either. Bulldog freshman Ben Hansbrough, the younger brother of North Carolina star Tyler Hansbrough, was named the SEC Freshman of the Week after hanging up 23 points, 8 assists and 3 steals in his first start against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Hansbrough torched the Islanders by hitting 6-of-7 field goals, 5-of-6 from 3-point land and 6-for-6 at the foul stripe. He also had 15 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists against Charlotte as Mississippi State bounced back from consecutive losses to Winthrop and at Clemson. Hansbrough and sophomore Jamont Gordon (16.7 ppg, 4.8 apg) have helped stabilize the Bulldogs’ ball handling, as MSU has 44 assists and 40 turnovers in the last three games after struggling with 36 assists and 60 TOs in the first three games of the year.

LSU: The Tigers got a big week off to a good start by downing No. 6 Texas A&M 64-62 Tuesday in ninth-ranked LSU’s first victory in a top-10 matchup since a 66-65 win over Tennessee in 1981. The Tigers also ended the SEC’s 10-game drought against ranked foes this season as junior center Glen Davis notched his 43rd career double-double with 24 points and 10 caroms. Davis leads the SEC in scoring with 19.7 points a game and ranks second in rebounding with 9.8.

OLE MISS: At 7-1, the Rebels are off to their best start since 2000-01 under first-year coach Andy Kennedy. Ole Miss junior guard Jermey Parnell was a sparkplug in an 85-77 come-from-behind triumph against New Orleans last week with a career-high 16 points on a red-hot shooting night (5-for-5 FG, 6-for-7 FT). The Rebs have forced 119 turnovers and rank third in the SEC in turnover margin (+4.8). The Rebels own the league’s best assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.35. Ole Miss ends a 10-day break for finals when it travels to face Memphis on Saturday.

AUBURN: The Tigers put up a good fight against No. 2 Pittsburgh Sunday but fell just short (74-66) despite Josh Dollard’s first career double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds). AU wraps up a stretch of nine games in 20 days when it tangles with instate foe South Alabama tonight. The coaching matchup pits two pretty decent college point guards – Auburn coach Jeff Lebo from North Carolina and USA’s John Pelphrey, one of “The Unforgettables” of Kentucky basketball lore. The series with the Jaguars is tied, but the teams haven’t met since 2001. The Tigers are 6.5-point favorites on WagerWeb.com.
