Tipping off on the hardwood  . . .

The NBA returns to action on Tuesday night with 10 games on its post-break slate. The top matchup of the night will take place out on the west coast, with the Hawks traveling to Los Angeles to take on the Lakers. Atlanta enters the second half of the season at 31-21 straight-up and 28-24 against-the-spread, while Lakers sit at 42-10 SU and 26-25-1 ATS atop the Western Conference standings.

The Magic will play host to the Bobcats on Tuesday night, with Minnesota at Washington, Philadelphia at Indiana, San Antonio at New York, Milwaukee at Detroit, New Orleans at Oklahoma City, New Jersey at Houston, and Memphis at Utah. As well, the Clippers will be in Phoenix to play the Suns; fired Phoenix head coach Terry Porter will be replaced by assistant Alvin Gentry for that game.

The march toward Madness . . .

There are four ranked teams in action on the college hoops schedule on Tuesday night, and two of them will take the floor at Mackey Arena when Purdue hosts Michigan State. The Boilermakers are at 19-6 SU and 11-11 ATS on the season after knocking off Iowa 49-45 in their last contest.

The Spartans are a lofty 20-4 SU and 12-9 ATS this year; they beat Michigan 54-42 in their meeting last week. BetUs Sportsbook has Purdue laying 2.5.

The other games of note on Tuesday has Clemson hosting Maryland with Sports Betting Sportsbook posting Clemson as a 10.5 point chalk and Marquette getting a visit from Seton Hall. The Golden Eagles had no trouble beating St. John’s Saturday, getting 20 points from Jerel McNeal in a 73-59 win.

Kentucky will be at Vanderbilt laying 2.5 at most sportsbooks.

Tipping off on the hardwood  . . .

The NBA takes Monday off as both players and coaches travel back from the weekend’s All-Star festivities. Action resumes on Tuesday with 10 games on tap.

The march toward Madness . . .

The top game on the college hoops schedule for Monday has Pittsburgh taking on Connecticut at the XL Center. Streaking Pittsburgh dispatched Cincinnati 85-69 last time out, with Sam Young tossing in 18 points. The Panthers now have a record of 23-2 SU and 13-6 ATS this season.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The National Hockey League has a half-dozen games on its schedule for Monday, including the Penguins on the road in Long Island. Pittsburgh took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission against the Maple Leafs on Saturday night, but then saw Toronto score six straight goals in a 6-2 Pens loss. The Islanders were also pounded in their last outing, as they fell 5-1 to the Flyers Saturday afternoon.

The Rangers will travel to St. Louis to take on the Blues on Monday night, while the Blue Jackets play host to the Stars, the Predators get a visit from the Senators, and the Oilers travel south to Phoenix to meet the Coyotes. As well, the Thrashers will be in Los Angeles to take on the Kings in a battle of two of the league’s worst teams; that game rounds out the night’s schedule at 10:30pm ET.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The bulk of the college hoops regular season concludes on Sunday, March 8, and the conference tournaments and March Madness will then take over the schedule. Oddsmakers have North Carolina pegged as the favorite to win the NCAA Tournament this year, with No. 1 Connecticut just behind them on that list. Pittsburgh and Duke hold down some top odds as well to take the championship.

Daytona 500 and NBA All Star Game Highlight Betting Card

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Daytona 500 launches the Sprint Cup Series season, while the best in the NBA hit the hardwood for the All-Star Game.

The Daytona weather does call for a 60 percent chance of showers so it could delay the Daytona start time.

Tipping Off in the NBA

The NBA got all of its preliminary All-Star festivities out of the way on Friday and Saturday, which just leaves the East vs. West game itself for Sunday night (with tipoff set for 8:00pm ET). With the game being played on a Western Conference court in Phoenix the oddsmakers have the home side pegged as the favorite – the line was hovering between 4.5 points and 7.5 points heading into the weekend. The East topped the West 134-128 in New Orleans last season, with LeBron James picking up his second MVP award in the last three years. The last time the game was in Phoenix was back in 1995, with the West winning 139-112.

The March to Madness

No. 3 North Carolina will try to follow up their impressive win over rival Duke with a road victory against Miami on Sunday. The Tar Heels went to 22-2 on the season with a 101-87 pounding of the Blue Devils on Wednesday; Ty Lawson was good for 25 points for North Carolina in that victory. The Hurricanes also met Duke last time out, but they came out on the wrong end of a 78-75 OT decision.

The No. 6 Blue Devils are also back in action on Sunday, as they’ll be on the road to take on Boston College. As well, No. 5 Louisville will host DePaul, No. 12 Clemson will visit Virginia, No. 15 Butler will get a visit from Loyola Chicago, and Indiana will host No. 22 Illinois. As well, No. 18 Arizona State will be at home versus USC; the Sun Devils rolled to a 74-67 win over No. 11 UCLA last time out.

A Trip Around the Rink

There are seven games on the National Hockey League’s schedule for Sunday, including an early 12:30pm ET matinee between the Flyers and Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Those two rivals last met on October 11, when the Rangers picked up a 4-3 road victory. Nikolai Zherdev had a goal and an assist in that win for New York, while Scott Hartnell had a shorthanded marker for Philly.

The Devils will have a tough home matchup on Sunday afternoon, as they’ll get a visit from Joe Thornton and the Sharks. A pair of 5:00pm ET contests has Colorado at Detroit and Washington at Florida, while the Hurricanes and Sabres will get going in Buffalo an hour later. There are then two matchups set for Sunday evening, with Atlanta visiting Anaheim, and Vancouver hosting Montreal.

Rounding Out the Slate

Sunday afternoon’s Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway is the first chance this season for Sprint Cup Series drivers to earn points for the standings. Martin Truex Jr. will be on the pole for the Daytona 500 this year, while Mark Martin will start from the No. 2 position on the grid. Gatorade Duel winners Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch will follow those two in the starting lineup. Tony Stewart is fifth on the grid, while defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson starts seventh, and fan-favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. will try to work his way up from 14th.

Ryan Newman won the Daytona 500 last year, but he’s 36th on the starting grid and entered the week back at 12/1 odds to grab the checkered flag once again. Kyle Busch was at 7/2 odds to visit victory lane, with Earnhardt Jr. at 9/2, Johnson and Jeff Gordon at 5/1, and Stewart and Carl Edwards listed at 8/1 to win the season-opening race. Coverage is set to get going at 2:00pm ET on FOX and the latest odds updated until race time.

ScoresOddsPicks.com Upgrades; Best Scores and Odds

The Offshore Insiders Network has unveiled the new look ScoresOddsPicks.com, which includes real-time scores and odds, game matchups, previews from a sports betting standpoint, injuries, spread trend sheets, weather and much more.

Grandmaster sports handicapper Joe Duffy, CEO of Offshore Insiders said bluntly, “When big budget competitor Jim Feist Com decided to downgrade their site and eliminate all their databases, we stepped to the forefront.”

While other sites have been forced to cut back on free content, ScoresOddsPicks.com is picking up the slack.

General Manager Stevie Vincent says they’ve already gotten very positive feedback from fantasy football and basketball players as well as Vegas spread bettors on the accuracy and depth of the injury reports.

The databases have something for every level of sports handicapping. There are trend “cheat sheets” for the handicapper who lacks the time to research in-depth. However for the more painstaking punter there are comprehensive databases.

All the information is free, no need to upgrade to a premium account.

The site is designed much after the successful scorephone roots of ScoresOddsPicks.com. In the pre-Internet days, the free scoreboard telephone numbers were the gold standard for sports handicapping information.

The versatility of the Internet gives the same information in real-time, with more flexibility and modernized content thanks to modern technology.

While Vincent promises the site will continue to improve, he says that “all the essentials are there to beat the sportsbooks.”

Saturday Sports Rundown

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: Top-ranked Connecticut looks to roll past Seton Hall, the Flyers host the Islanders, and the NBA stages All-Star Saturday.

Tipping Off in the NBA

Saturday’s NBA All-Star festivities begin just after lunch with practice sessions for both the Eastern and Western squads, followed by the D-League All-Star Game. Phoenix’s U.S. Airways Center then offers up All-Star Saturday Night starting at 8:00pm ET, with the activities including the Skills Challenge, Three-Point Shootout, H.O.R.S.E. competition, and Slam Dunk contest. Dwight Howard is considered the big favorite to win the Slam Dunk contest again this year; he’ll be challenged by J.R. Smith, Nate Robinson, and Rudy Fernandez for that trophy. The All-Star Game is scheduled to get underway at 8:00pm ET on Sunday night.

Daytona 500 Betting Line

The NASCAR odds have odds to finish top three, odds to win and even betting lines among groups. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and Tony Stewart are the betting favorites.

The March to Madness

Top-ranked Connecticut will take on Seton Hall at the Prudential Center on Saturday afternoon in a Big East matchup. The Huskies had no trouble knocking off Syracuse in their last contest, cruising to a 63-49 victory to improve to 23-1 on the season. However, UConn guard Jerome Dyson suffered a knee injury in that contest and could miss the rest of the year. The Pirates bumped their record to 14-9 (but just 5-6 in the Big East) with a 74-49 victory over DePaul last time out.

No. 2 Oklahoma will host Texas Tech on Saturday, while No. 4 Pittsburgh gets a visit from Cincinnati, No. 7 Wake Forest has No. 25 Florida State come to campus, No. 8 Memphis visits Southern Miss, and St. John’s travels to play No. 10 Marquette. As well, No. 11 UCLA will be trying to pick up a win over Arizona at the McKale Center; the Bruins were upset 74-67 by Arizona State on Thursday.

Best Betting Picks

Stevie Vincent continues to befuddle the bookmakers as his Ivy League GAME of the DECADE was an underdog Penn team that won by 73-52. A Trip Around the Rink

Afternoon action in the National Hockey League on Saturday starts off with a 1:00pm ET matchup between the Islanders and Flyers in Philadelphia. The Flyers were bounced 5-2 by the Senators last time out, with Antero Niittymaki surrendering five goals on just 28 shots. The Islanders are coming off a 4-2 loss to the Devils, and they’ll be without center Doug Weight for the next six weeks due to a sprained MCL. D-man Mark Streit (shoulder) is day-to-day for New York.

The other early matchup on Saturday sees the Oilers in Los Angeles for a 4:00pm ET puck drop. The evening slate then features seven more games, including Columbus at Carolina, Pittsburgh at Toronto, Washington at Tampa Bay, Boston at Nashville, Ottawa at Minnesota, and Calgary at Phoenix. As well, the Stars will be looking to pick up a road win by topping the Hawks in Chicago.

Brett Favre might have retired, but it doesn’t look like Kurt Warner is going anywhere. The Cardinals quarterback, who just led his team to a berth in the Super Bowl, has reportedly begun negotiations on a new contract. Getting Warner back in the fold would certainly help Arizona’s chances of repeating as NFC champions next season – and it might give their Super XLIV odds a nudge as well. Despite their successful 2008 campaign the Cards aren’t considered one of the favorites to win the trophy next season, with their odds back at around 30/1 at the sportsbooks.
