The Penguins will be looking to tie up their second-round series with the Capitals on Friday night when the teams meet on the ice in Pittsburgh for Game 4 of the set. The other NHL game on tap for Friday night has Boston at Carolina, with the Hurricanes also grabbing a 3-2 overtime win on Wednesday. Eric Staal, Sergei Samsonov, and Jussi Jokinen (in the extra frame) potted goals in the win for the Canes, who now lead the best-of-seven series 2-1. Cam Ward had 21 saves in the win. NHL Playoff Picks

As many hockey betting pundits say, Game 4 is the most important in any Stanley Cup odds series, as the gap between a 2-2 series tie and three games to one is massive. Let’s break down the crucial Game 4s happening in the Eastern Conference semifinal round tonight.

Penguins vs Capitals odds: Game 4 tonight at 7:00 p.m. ET
NHL odds: Capitals +145, Penguins -165

It was practically do or die for the Penguins odds in Game 3 and it really showed, as the Penguins outworked the Caps all night long and were by far the better team. Thanks to Simeon Varlamov’s phenomenal play, the Caps pushed the Pens to overtime, but the deserving team won as Kris Letang potted the overtime winner for Pittsburgh. Will the Caps strike back or is Pittsburgh poised to even the series? My thinking is that the Penguins vs Capitals odds should continue bringing us dynamic, tight hockey games and it would be all too fitting for the Pens to even the series. They’ll be fired up again and they’ll repeat their strategy of moving their feet to get the Caps in penalty trouble while peppering Varlamov. This should be another close hockey betting playoff matchup, but the Caps are still not a great road team and should fall to the Pens again.

Hockey betting pick: Penguins -165

Hurricanes vs Bruins odds – Game 4 tonight at 7:30 p.m. ET
NHL odds: Bruins -125, Hurricanes +105

Hard to believe the Bruins odds are in serious trouble after Boston looked so strong against Montreal, but the truth is that Carolina simply wasn’t getting the respect it deserved all along. Even tonight after winning Game 3 at home, the ‘Canes are sportsbook underdogs. The key to the series so far has been the battle between Eric Staal and Zdeno Chara, which Staal has won to this point. Chara needs some support to keep from tiring, as he did during overtime in Game 3, and I’m not sure the other Bruin defenders can give that to him, so it’s up to the Bruin forwards to step it up. Marc Savard, Phil Kessel and Michael Ryder have to be better tonight. They should rise to the occasion as the Bruins prove they are in fact tough enough to bounce back in a Stanley Cup betting series.

Hockey betting pick: Bruins -125
