Tipping off on the hardwood  . . .

LeBron James and the Cavaliers will tip off their second-round series with the Hawks at home on Tuesday night, with Cleveland pegged as a big 11.5-point favorite. James poured in 36 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in his team’s 99-78 series-clinching win over the Pistons way back on April 26. The Hawks, meanwhile, needed seven games to get past the Heat in the first round; they got 27 points from Joe Johnson on Sunday afternoon in their 91-78 Game 7 victory.

The other NBA game on tap for Tuesday has Dallas at Denver, with the Nuggets holding a 1-0 series lead after picking up a 109-95 home win in the opener on Sunday. Nene had 24 points for Denver in that contest, while Carmelo Anthony pitched in with 23 points. Dirk Nowitzki led the way on offense for Dallas with 28 points, and Jason Kidd was good for 15 points in the loss. The oddsmakers like Denver‘s chances in Game 2, as they have been pegged as the 6-point favorite.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Tim Lincecum will be gunning for his third victory of the season on Tuesday afternoon when his Giants take on the Cubs in Chicago. The righthander is 2-1 with a 3.16 ERA on the season, and he grabbed the victory last time out vs. the Dodgers by allowing just three runs over seven innings of work. Lincecum’s opponent on Tuesday will be Sean Marshall; he’s at 0-1 with a 3.32 ERA so far.

Also on the National League schedule for Tuesday: Houston at Washington, Milwaukee at Pittsburgh, the Mets at Atlanta, Cincinnati at Florida, Colorado at San Diego, Arizona at the Dodgers, and Philadelphia at St. Louis. Cardinals probable starter Adam Wainwright is perfect at 3-0 (with a 2.76 ERA) this season.

On tap in the Junior Circuit on Tuesday: Cleveland at Toronto, Baltimore at Tampa Bay, Texas at Seattle, Minnesota at Detroit, the White Sox at Kansas City, the Angels at Oakland, and Boston at the Yankees. Red Sox probable starter Josh Beckett (2-2, 7.22 ERA) was pounded by the Bronx Bombers on April 25, surrendering eight earned runs on 10 hits over just five innings of work.

Taking a trip around the rink . . .

Coming off a big win in Game 2 on Saturday the Blackhawks will be looking to take a 2-1 series lead on Tuesday night when they host Vancouver in the third game of their second-round set. Patrick Sharp scored twice in Chicago‘s 6-3 comeback win on Saturday, while Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 18 of 21 Vancouver shots. Sami Salo and Alexander Edler staked the Canucks to a 2-0 lead in the first period in Game 2 before their team’s collapse, while Roberto Luongo was victimized for five goals on 31 shots. Chicago is a -140 home favorite Tuesday.

The other Western Conference series also stages a Game 3 on Tuesday night, with Detroit on the west coast to face the Ducks. Anaheim pulled out a 4-3 win in triple overtime on Sunday afternoon to knot up the best-of-seven set at a game apiece. Todd Marchant had the OT winner for the Ducks in that contest, while Ryan Getzlaf picked up a goal and two assists in regulation time. Jonas Hiller had 59 saves in the win, and Wings counterpart Chris Osgood stopped 42 shots.

Players Championship Odds – Tiger Not as Safe as Normal

The fifth major of golf betting is here with the Players Championship odds. Hosted by the TPC at Sawgrass in Florida every year, it features the biggest purse in PGA betting and one of the best sportsbook fields you’ll ever see. Let’s look at some notable competitors entering the big tournament.

Tiger Woods
Players Championship odds: +285

Many players sports betting online like going with the borderline “sure thing” in golf betting and Tiger is obviously the closest to that moniker, but he’s not nearly as safe as normal this week. He’s been great by any mortal golfer’s standards this season, but his recent finishes of sixth and fourth were sub-par for him. The big reason behind his inability to break through with a win: hiccups with his putter. He misread a few breaks at crucial moments in two straight tournaments and that doesn’t bode well at the speedy greens of Sawgrass, where Tiger did win in 2001 but hasn’t cracked the top 10 in six straight starts.

Phil Mickelson
Players Championship odds: +1015

Love Lefty or hate him, golf betting fans can never ignore him at a big event like the Players Championship odds. He’s enjoyed past success at Sawgrass, including a 2007 win, but his short game has disappeared this season, so it’s hard to endorse him in a tournament where accuracy is paramount.

Sergio Garcia
Players Championship odds: +4250

Is there anyone left on the Sergio bandwagon after his disastrous start to the 2009 golf betting season? The once-proud Spaniard hasn’t finished above 13th in any PGA event this year and seems to have lost his confidence. He’s the defending Players Championship odds champ and thus could draw on past success to find his groove, but his game isn’t where it needs to be for him to seriously contend at the sportsbook this week.

Sean O’Hair and Brian Gay
Players Championship odds: +2550, +8050

These two non-household names fall into the same category in that they both have hot hands at the moment, with wins in recent weeks. Gay’s sportsbook value is way better, but he may be a trap for golf betting fans. His win at the Verizon Heritage came against a weak field whereas O’Hair’s win last week at the Quail Hollow came against a all-star field very similar to the one playing in the Players Championship odds. O’Hair warrants serious consideration at the sportsbook.

Henrik Stenson
Players Championship odds: +4850

Heres my top golf betting sleeper of the week. He has two top-10s at Sawgrass and is one of just three players with multiple top-10s and no missed cuts in the Players Championship odds. He’s flirted with victory all year and he may break out this week. Don’t forget about him in sports wagering!
