Putting a first-year hurler on the mound in such a big situation is the reason that the Tigers are underdogs in your offshore sportsbook, especially as Porcello has lost both of his starts at the Metrodome this year.

Scott Baker’s (15-9, 4.36) last start also came against the Tigers, as he gave up an unearned run on five hits over five innings of an 8-3 victory over Detroit on the road. That was his first win in four starts against the Tigers in 2009, and he’s posted a 6.75 ERA. At home, Baker hasn’t been all that great, going 6-5 in 16 starts with a 4.55 ERA.

Betting services are listing the Twins as -168 favorites at home, given their 48-33 record at the Metrodome, and Detroit‘s 3-7 record in their last 10 trips to Minnesota. The Tigers used ace Justin Verlander on Sunday just to get to this game, and now their season rests on the shoulders of a rookie, albeit a rookie who is pitched well since the All-Star break. Porcello is 6-3 in 14 starts with a 3.92 ERA in the second half of the year, but Baker has been even better, going 8-2 in 15 starts with a 3.21 ERA. Detroit really should have had this division wrapped up at least two weeks ago, and they may have used all their bullets just to get here.
