Florida-South Carolina

Press Notes

South Carolina,
10-4 and 0-1 in the SEC, returns home to host its SEC home opener by welcoming
the defending NCAA Champion Florida Gators. The No. 2 Gators come in with a
15-2 record, including 2-0 in the SEC. Florida is riding an eight-game winning
streak, while Carolina has dropped
two straight after piecing together a six-game winning streak. The Gamecocks
opened their 16^th season of SEC play at Georgia on Wed., Jan 10 and
fell 80-56 in their worst lost in Athens since 2000 (62-90 at Georgia on Jan.
22, 2000). USC is 5-11 in SEC openers, including 1-6 on the road. It was the
first time USC opened the SEC slate against Georgia
during its 16 years in the SEC. The Gators are 2-0 in the SEC with home wins
against Georgia
(67-51, Jan. 6) and Arkansas
(79-72, Jan. 10). USC won the season series last year with a 68-62 win in Columbia
and a 71-67 victory in Gainesville,
but fell 49-47 in the SEC Tournament Championship game. USC is 5-11 in SEC
openers, including 1-6 on the road. It was the first time USC opened the SEC
slate against Georgia
during its 16 years in the SEC. The Gators are 2-0 in the SEC with home wins
against Georgia
(67-51, Jan. 6) and Arkansas
(79-72, Jan. 10). USC had won six
straight, but has dropped the last two (vs. No. 9 Kansas and at Georgia).
It was USC’s first loss to a top 10 team in four
tries. This year USC opened the season with three of the first five on the road
and has tallied a 3-2 record on the road. Carolina
is 7-2 at home.

San Diego-Pepperdine

The Waves, who played 11 of 16 non-conference games on the
road and 13 of their first 18 games away from Firestone Fieldhouse,
enter Saturday’s game with a 4-14 overall record and an
0-2 mark in WCC play. Pepperdine
opened conference play last weekend and fell to Portland
(73-69) and Gonzaga (69-52) in the Pacific Northwest. San
Diego enters Saturday’s game with a 10-6 mark and is
0-1 in WCC play after falling 103-100 to San
Francisco in double overtime last week. The Toreros
defeated UC Riverside, 78-62, on Wednesday. San
Diego is averaging 74.1 points a game while allowing
69.9 points a contest.

Utah-New Mexico

Two programs in unfamiliar territory square off Saturday
at The Pit/Bob King Court in Albuquerque.
New Mexico and Utah,
both 0-3 in Mountain Western Conference play and saddled with losing streaks.
The Lobos (11-7) are 0-3 in league play for only the second time since the
1960-61 Skyline Conference season. The 1979-80 UNM
team began 0-4 in the Western Athletic Conference. Utah
(5-11) has not started a conference season 0-3 since 1952-53, also in the
Skyline. The Utes were picked to finish 4^th in the MWC.

New Mexico
has lost four straight after a painful 65-57 loss at 18^th-ranked Air
Force on Tuesday. The Lobos let a 21-point lead evaporate as the Falcons
outscored UNM 40-7 during one stretch, including 21
straight points in the second half. UNM is 6-7
following a 5-0 start to the season. After Tuesday’s 73-57 loss at Colorado
State, Utah is 5-11 overall and
has lost five in a row and six of seven. The Utes are 1-7 away from home and
0-5 on opponents’ home floors this season. New Mexico
is 10-1 at home and is 43-4 in The Pit since the 2004-05 season.
Moreover, UNM has not endured a four-game losing skid
in conference play since 2000-01 when it lost at home to Wyoming, then fell at BYU, Utah and Air Force. The last time for consecutive
conference losses in The Pit was five years ago to Utah
and San Diego State
in 2002. The Lobos lost to Colorado State
at home last Saturday. Under head coach Richie McCay, New Mexico
is 4-0 against Utah in Albuquerque.
Two of the last three victories here came against ranked Ute teams, including a
65-54 decision in 2005 that stopped Utah’s
18-game winning streak.

Rice-East Carolina

Press Notes

Saturday’s game vs. East Carolina
is the first Conference USA
road game for Rice and it also marks the first time ever that the basketball
Owls have played in Greenville, N.C.

Rice coming off a thrilling
come-from-behind 75 to 70 overtime win over Tulane on Wednesday, while the
Pirates lost at Tulsa 67 to 49.

Temple-UMass

Press Notes

Coming off a tremendous 91-84 win over defending A-10
regular-season champion George Washington on Wednesday, the Minutemen host
arch-rival Temple on Saturday at Noon at the Mullins
Center. UMass
comes into the game with a 12-4 record and a perfect 2-0 mark in A-10 play. The
Minutemen are off the best start since the 1995-96 season
when they won the first 26 games of the season and were ranked No. 1 most of
the year. UMass is seeking its first 3-0 start in
A-10 play since 1997-98 when they started 8-0. The UMass-Temple
rivalry opens a new chapter as the Owls come to Amherst
without their longtime Hall of Fame Coach John Chaney, for the first time in
history. Under new coach Fran Dunphy, the Owls are
6-8 overall and 0-2 in the league, riding a four-game losing streak. The Minutemen
reached the 10-win mark earlier than any point in a season since that year,
when they were 10-0. UMass has been stellar away from the Mullins Center this season with an 8-2 record. Those eight road/neutral
wins are tied for the most in the nation among all teams. No. 12 Butler is 8-1
away from Indianapolis and Virginia
Commonwealth has an 8-2 mark like UMass. It
is huge improvement for UMass, which was just 3-13
away from home in 2005-06. UMass has won eight of the
10 games away from home in the first two months. That includes a stretch of
five wins in a row away from Mullins. UMass has won
14 of its last 18 at home.

Cincinnati-South Florida

The University
of Cincinnati will seek its first
BIG EAST Conference victory of the season and an end to a three-game losing
streak when the Bearcats visit USF on Sunday, Jan.
14. Game time at the USF Sun Dome is 2 p.m. UC enters the
contest with a 9-6 record but has been idle since its 54-42 loss to Rutgers
on Jan. 7 in its league opener. USF is 9-8 overall
and 0-3 in BIG EAST play. The Bulls lost to Louisville,
81-55, on Wednesday. Cincinnati and
USF have played one common opponent. Both have lost
to UAB. UC incurred a 59-57
setback to the Blazers on Dec. 4 while USF fell,
78-62, on Dec. 27. The Bearcats will be out to avert their longest losing
streak in 19 seasons. UC last dropped four in a row
in February of the 1987-88 season.
