Bulls-Hawks

Atlanta Journal Constitution

After scoring 82 and 88 points in their last two losses
and mustering a combined 20 assists, it’s no secret what the Hawks are
searching for. They need to learn how to share again — share the ball, as well
as the responsibility and burden on defense.

Raptors-Magic

Daytona Beach News-Journal

A victory tonight over the Toronto Raptors would give the
Magic their 11th win in a row at home. If the Magic don’t end up
meeting the Detroit Pistons in the first round of the playoffs, it would only
be natural for them to look back in regret at games they should have won but didn’t.
Topping that list of blown opportunities could be a 92-90 loss to the Raptors
to begin a six-game homestand in December. Barely two
weeks later, the Magic went to Toronto
and were hammered 121-97, with the Raptors shooting 63 percent for the game and
getting 24 points from rookie Charlie Villanueva. “That’s incentive enough
right there,” Hill said of the Magic’s record against a team that was never in
playoff contention this season. The Raptors went into Tuesday night at Miami
riding an eight-game losing streak. They were 0-7 since Chris Bosh, their
leading scorer (22.5) and rebounder (9.2), was lost for the season with a sprained left thumb. The
Magic have gone with the same starting lineup since March 11, while the Raptors
have used 25 different combinations this season.

Sixers-Nets

Delaware News Journal

The Nets, meanwhile, have won 15 of 16 games and locked up
the Atlantic Division title more than a week ago. The 76ers saved their season
with wins Monday against Washington
and last Saturday against Chicago.Incredibly enough,
they are a game out of sixth place in the conference, where Milwaukee
and Indiana are tied. Both teams,
however, hold the tiebreaker advantage over the Sixers, as do the Bulls. It’s
not known whether Chris Webber will return tonight after he missed the previous
two games with a lower back strain. Steven Hunter has started in his place
alongside Dalembert, giving the 76ers two aggressive,
athletic shot blockers. The two combined for 28 points, 22 rebounds and five
blocks against Washington on
Monday.

Cavaliers-Pistons

Detroit Free Press

LaBron James has become nearly
unstoppable the past 10 games, scoring more than 30 points in each one,
including a streak of nine straight with at least 35 points. Finally that has
meant victories for the Cavs, who have won nine of those 10 games and are
securely in the No. 4 Eastern Conference playoff position. The Cavs are
adjusting without Ilgauskas, who has missed the past three games, and
re-integrating guard Larry Hughes, back the past four games after missing three
months with a finger injury. Ronald (Flip) Murray
has been LeBron James’ steadying sidekick, especially the past two weeks when
he has scored at least 16 points in every game, including 25 on Monday against
the Hornets. The Cavs have won 11 of their past 12 games.

The bookmaker overthrow continued yesterday as The Center

Godspicks.com goes 5-3 but it included a baseball Wise Guy sweep despite the
fact both were dogs: Dodgers and the White Sox.
Godspicks

and the NBA.

Raptors-Heat

Globe and Mail

Heading
into the final two weeks of the National Basketball Association’s regular
season, the Raptors are mired in an eight-game losing string. This latest
Toronto swoon should not come as any great
surprise, as the Raptors have been without franchise star Chris Bosh for the
past seven games. The all-star power forward, who is
Toronto’s leader in both points (22.5 a
game, on average) and rebounds (9.2), sprained his left thumb on March 26 and
was lost for the season. Bosh’s absence has meant
increased playing time for rookies Charlie Villanueva and Joey Graham.
Toronto’s inability to win tight games has
hindered its progress all year. The Raptors have lost 11 games by three and
fewer points, the most in the NBA this season.
Toronto’s record in overtime is dismal,
1-9.

Spurs-Sonics

MySA.Com

Ginobili and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich
both expect him to play Tuesday against Seattle.
Ginobili missed Sunday’s game after bruising his left calf and shin in Friday’s
loss to Dallas. Spurs’ forward
Robert Horry returned to the lineup for Sunday’s game after missing Friday’s
game against the Dallas Mavericks following the death of his father-in-law, but
said he will miss Tuesday’s game.

Warriors-Lakers

Noticias.info

The Warriors are still looking for their first win over
the Lakers this season, after dropping each of their previous three match-ups
versus Los Angeles. In their only
other meeting at Staples Center,
the two teams fought it out in an overtime thriller that the Lakers eventually
won 106-105. The Warriors played without Jason Richardson in that contest, and
they may have to do so again, as the team’s leading scorer is listed as
questionable with a sore right knee.

God’s Tid-Bets, Vol. 19

God’s Tid-Bets, Vol. 19

Joe Duffy (JoeDuffy.net)

This is the latest in a series of a Godgepodge of sports betting strategy and other sports handicapping and gaming issues.

Granddaddy of Them All Still Worthwhile Despite Long Nap

Over the years, we’ve reviewed some of our favorite information sites.  Computer Sports World and I go back a long time.  Before this fancy thing called the Internet, I was subscribing to them in the dinosaur days of dial-up BBS.

If you remember Procomm DOS software, you like me are probably middle aged or older.

Baseball is the last remaining sport I use CSW, only because I think their baseball match-ups, the “516” file as we old timers know it, is very succinct.  The file focuses on the primary information we use to weed out games before digging deeper with other sources.

The one thing that baffles me is why they persist on not updating the current year’s data until 7-10 games into the year. They instead insist on just posting the static data from last year.  Earth to Computer Sports World, last year’s data will not change.

I did make the mistake of calling and asking and was simply told the in house writers asked for them to not update until there is more data. One could argue limited year to date statistics has limited value.  But again, considering last year’s stats could be put into a permanent file for the writers, the customer could then not have the decision made for him that the first week’s worth of games has no handicapping value, but somehow what happened the previous season does.

Buyer beware that CSW is essentially worthless until a week or so into the season.

All in all, even now a good source, but the relative Johnny-come-lately sites have diminished Computer Sports World’s value even after once they get around to acknowledging a new year has started.

Score One for ESPN

One of the most commonly asked questions on the posting boards is “what is your favorite site for scores?”  Though sometimes there are some technical glitches, ESPN’s “Real Time Scoreboard” (part of ESPN Insider) is unbelievable.  Just to give you an idea, sometimes I will be listening to the game on my satellite radio and the slight radio delay is behind “watching” the play-by-play on my computer.

Sadly ESPN must kowtow to the hypocrisy that exists in America about gambling. Otherwise it would be nice in college sports to have a scoreboard that is close to real time without having to sift through worthless games that are not in the offshore rotation.

Dynamics Change in the Postseason

I know there is one handicapper out there who most of his handicapping is based on the home/road variances.  That’s been a part of our handicapping for years.  But the key for a quality handicapper is one who knows when and how to make proper adjustments.

One of the great examples is how the considerations must be adjusted for the NBA playoffs when it comes to weighing home and road performance. On one hand, the fair to middling teams often will have much larger attendance and for all teams generally more enthusiastic home crowds.

However during the regular season, the travel schedule disproportionately benefits the home team. Teams playing their fifth game in five nights or third in four nights are usually the road team. Depth isn’t as much of an issue as teams shorten their bench during the postseason.

Of course this would apply to both home and road games, but a deep bench paid dividends the most was during the regular season was in the midst of long road trips, a situation that does not apply to the playoffs.

Don’t get me wrong, home and road records are still huge in our analysis during the postseason, but we balance with total awareness that tweaks must be made on a team-to-team basis.

Sampler, which is the daily rundown of top sports service plays.

NBA

Wizards-Sixers

Philadelphia Inquirer

Gilbert Arenas could barely bend over, and even forcing a
half-smile seemed to hurt. The Washington Wizards’ all-star point guard is the
symbol of his team lately in more ways than one. It’s an injury-plagued Wizards
squad that has lost four of its last six games. Washington
(39-37) is so banged up that coach Eddie Jordan gave the Wizards yesterday off
from practice. The Wizards own the fifth Eastern Conference playoff spot, while
the Sixers and Chicago Bulls are 35-41, tied for the eighth and final playoff
berth. In Saturday’s 99-86 loss to the Miami Heat at the Verizon Center,
the Wizards were missing two starters, forward Caron Butler (sprained right
thumb) and center Etan Thomas (sprained lower back). Butler,
who is averaging a career-best 17.3 points, has missed the last two games and
is listed as day-to-day. Thomas hurt his back during Friday’s 114-101 loss at Atlanta
and is not expected to play tonight. Guard Antonio Daniels played Saturday
despite having a sprained left wrist. And there is Arenas, averaging 29.1
points per game after scoring 30 points against Miami
in 40 minutes. Still, Arenas says he will be ready for the Sixers.

Hawks-Magic

Orlando Sentinel

Orlando will
try to increase its home winning streak to 10 games at TD Waterhouse Centre.
The Magic haven’t lost at home since the Houston Rockets beat them 89-84 on Feb. 26. They have claimed such contenders as
the Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks and Detroit Pistons. The struggling Hawks
have defeated the Magic twice this season, which has cost Orlando
dearly as it attempts to stay in the playoff hunt. Atlanta
beat Orlando 96-94 on Feb. 3 and 108-107 in overtime March 19 at Philips Arena,
and the Magic beat the Hawks 108-101 on March 26. The Hawks had to travel from Minnesota
on Sunday.

Knicks-Pacers

NY Times

The Knicks (22-54) have three straight victories for the
first time since early January. They won their 22nd game and are
guaranteed to avoid the worst record in franchise history.

Cavaliers-Hornets

Times Picayune

The Cavaliers (46-30) have won 10 of the past 11 games to
remain in position to enter the playoffs with homecourt advantage as the fourth
seed in the Eastern Conference.

Rockets-Jazz

Salt Lake Tribune

The Rockets were to arrive at their Salt
Lake City
hotel around 2
a.m.
Monday morning, dragging a little after flying to Utah
an hour past the completion of a Sunday night game in Sacramento.
Their best player, former scoring champion Tracy McGrady,
isn’t with them, his bad back having ended his season a month ago. The Rockets,
mathematically eliminated last week, are simply fulfilling their contractual
obligations now, as best they can. These are games the Jazz are supposed to
win, and so far – if only lately – they have, going 5-0 against their last five
sub-.500 opponents. But the quality of opposition fluctuates crazily this time
of year, and for a young team like the Jazz, that presents problems. The Jazz
have beaten Houston four of the
last five games in Utah.
About the Rockets: They are 6-12 on the second night of back-to-back
games. They are 6-23 when F Tracy McGrady, who is out
with a back injury, does not play.

Nuggets-Blazers

Daily Camera

The Nuggets are 3-0 against the Trail Blazers this season
and have won six in a row overall against Portland.
The Nuggets can clinch their first division title in 18 years with a win. The
Nuggets squeaked past the Golden State Warriors at home on Saturday night. Carmelo Anthony scored a game-high 28 points in the 95-92
victory. Kenyon Martin and Eduardo Najera did not
play because of injuries. Najera may not return until
the playoffs because of foot injury suffered last week against the Lakers.
Martin’s status is less clear, but he may rest his sore knee the remainder of
the regular season as well.

Mavericks-Clippers

Star-Telegram

For the Mavs coasting into the
playoffs isn’t an option. Not with five games left. Not after last season. If
the surging Mavs (58-19) and talent-rich Clippers
(44-32) keep their current positions as the fourth and fifth seeds in the
Western Conference, a first-round matchup would follow.

Godspicks is proud to be part of the Handicapper’s Sampler

NBA

Bobcats-Raptors

Charlotte Observer

The Bobcats’ opponent today should look very familiar—injured,
young and undersized just like they are. Chris Bosh is out the rest of the season with a thumb injury, just
as the Bobcats’ Emeka Okafor is
with a severe ankle sprain. Several are playing out of position for Toronto
(Gerald Wallace can relate), so
this should be a pretty even, if less than fascinating, matchup.

Nets-Bucks

KRT Wire

14-game winning streak in the NBA is something truly magical.
The New Jersey Nets, the Milwaukee Bucks’ opponent on Sunday afternoon at the Bradley
Center
, had such a streak broken
when they lost at home to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday. Today’s game
could be a preview of a first-round playoff series, because it’s entirely
possible the Bucks and Nets could meet in a 3-6 matchup
or maybe even a 2-7 pairing. The Nets have won two of three games from the
Bucks this season, with Milwaukee’s
only victory coming Nov. 2 in what was the Bucks’ second game of the season and
New Jersey’s season opener.

Magic-Heat

Orlando Sentinel

The Magic have upset the Dallas Mavericks and the Detroit
Pistons during its three-game winning streak. Along with the Pistons, the Magic
also have defeated division leaders Miami,
Phoenix and Denver.
F Hedo Turkoglu, who
bruised his right knee in a fall during Friday’s victory against the Pistons,
is expected to play today in Miami.
Magnetic resonance imaging Saturday was negative. The Magic have won 11 of
their past 15games. Miami has defeated
Orlando in two of their three games
this season. The Magic beat the Heat at home 80-77 on Nov. 26.

Grizzlies-Spurs

Commercial Appeal

While the Grizzlies are 0-3 against the Spurs this season,
one loss was by three points and another by just one point. San
Antonio
hasn’t lost three games in a row all season.
But the Spurs are on their third two-game skid after consecutive home losses to
Sacramento and Dallas,
which still trails the Spurs by one game for the top seed in the Western
Conference. So the Spurs have much to play for. The schedule is favorable for San
Antonio
to win the division and secure the top seed
because after tonight the Spurs’ last five games are against teams with losing
records. The Spurs’ close wins over the Grizzlies this season are in keeping
with San Antonio’s form: The Spurs have the league’s best record in games
decided by six points or less — 17-6 (.739).

Sunday Godspicks: 8 Straight MLB Winners
