LSU-Duke

The Advocate

As well as it played on defense in its first two NCAA
tournament games, the LSU basketball team knows it
needs to pick it up another notch this week. Of course, no one needs to remind
the Tigers that giving No. 13 seed Iona and No. 12 seed
Texas A&M fits in their first- and second-round
games is one thing. Doing the same to top-ranked and top national seed Duke is
an entirely different — and critical — challenge. Their names are J.J. Redick and Shelden Williams, a pair of All-Americans who average 27.2
and 18.7 points, respectively. Duke has advanced to the Sweet 16 nine straight
years and 23 times overall, while LSU will be making
its ninth appearance in the regional semifinals.Duke
is 17-5 all-time in the Sweet 16 and LSU is 5-3. Blue
Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski is 11-5 in this round, while Brady is 0-1 with
that appearance coming in 2000.

Bradley-Memphis

Detroit News

Bradley was the lowest seed to reach the regional
semifinals. The Braves are the first No. 13 seed to get that far since 1999,
when Oklahoma won its first two
games before losing to Michigan State
in the round of 16. Only two teams seeded lower than 13 have reached the round
of 16: Cleveland State
in 1986 and Chattanooga in 1997
were 14 seeds. Both lost in the third round. While the power conferences kept
looking weaker, Memphis cruised
through the Tournament’s first weekend with a pair of double-digit victories.

West Virginia-Texas

Associated Press

West Virginia
(22-10) will play Texas on
Thursday in an Atlanta Regional semifinal. The Longhorns beat West Virginia,
76-75, Nov. 21 at a tournament in Kansas City, Mo.

Gonzaga-UCLA

Associated Press

Pundits contend the Zags defense
is too porous. Some opponents are upset that the Zags
(29-3) shoot so many more free throws than their rivals, hinting at referee
intimidation by their fans at home.Coach Mark Few is exasperated by the free throw controversy. The
Zags do have a big advantage at the line, making 647
of 827 attempts this season, for 78 percent. Their opponents have attempted
only 607 free throws, making 418 for 68 percent.That
means the Zags score an average of seven points per
game more than opponents from the charity stripe. But the advantage is the same
on the road and at home. Gonzaga’s 20-game winning
streak is the longest in the nation. Second is UCLA’s nine straight wins. The Zags are 17-7 against Pacific-10 teams since 1999, 2-1 this
year. Gonzaga has a 12-8 record in the NCAA tournament and has never advanced
beyond the Elite Eight. UCLA is 87-32 with 11 national titles. Gonzaga won
59-43 the only previous time the teams played, in 1999. The defensive-minded
Bruins (29-6) have held their last nine opponents to 60 or fewer points, while
Gonzaga (29-3) — winner of 20 straight — has never been held under 62 in 20 NCAA-tournament
games.

NBA

Timberwolves-Nets

Journal News

The Nets finally are getting the consistent production out
of their bench that they’ve been searching for all season. The Nets have won
six straight games heading into tonight’s contest against the Minnesota Timberwolves. And the reserves have played a part in just
about all of them.

Rockets-Mavericks

Mercury News

Dallas has
lost four games in March, which is more than it lost in January and February
combined. Fewer three-point attempts has translated into fewer fast-break
points for the opponent and allowed the defense to set up, which is why Dallas
is allowing just 92.5 points per game.

Blazers-Suns

East Valley
Tribune

The Amaré Stoudemire
watch is over. After missing five months and 66 games while recovering from microfracture surgery on his left knee, Stoudemire
has been activated by the Suns. Stoudemire’s return
might cure the Suns of a recent malaise perhaps caused by the fact that they
seemingly have been locked into the No. 2 seed for weeks. The Suns (45-21)
have lost four of their past seven games. Stoudemire’s
return will give the Suns all their big men back except for Kurt Thomas, who is
expected to miss at least the rest of the regular season with a foot injury.
Brian Grant returned Tuesday night at Utah
after missing three months with a knee injury.

SOUTH CAROLINA +3’ Cincinnati

One thing is for sure, Dave Odom makes sure his players
take the NIT seriously. Should South Carolina
win, though, it would be Odom’s third NIT semifinals with the Gamecocks. It
would also be Odom’s fourth visit to Madison
Square Garden

this millennium – he won titles with Wake
Forest
in 2000, South
Carolina
last year and lost in the NIT finals with
the Gamecocks in 2002.

The alma mater of Hootie and the
Blowfish won the NIT last year. This
game goes down the last shot. Let’s hope
not to get screwed it OT.

Godspicks.com has an NBA Wise Guy play and an NIT Major.  Last night we had winning night 9-of-11 with

85 percent of gamblers will never have without our advice.  And our baseball dog prowess is just around
the corner.

NBA

PHILADELPHIA -8’ Atlanta

After missing the last four games with a right foot sprain
and contusion, 76ers guard Allen Iverson declared himself
ready to go for Wednesday’s matchup at the Wachovia
Center
against the Atlanta Hawks.

His return makes Philly a much better team. He has missed
the last four games and the Sixers (31-35) lost all four games. They are 2-6
this season in games without Iverson.

The Sixers were 0-3 on their recent road trip with games
against Seattle, the Los Angeles
Clippers and Golden State.
Iverson didn’t make the trip and stayed back getting treatment.

Iverson said he was “watching all those games and seeing
different times and situations I could have helped our team get over the hump.”

Philly needs a blowout and the Answer is back.  We look for a rout.

Old Dominion-Hofstra

Virginian Pilot

The Monarchs earned a rematch with their Colonial Athletic
Association brethren Monday night with a 70-66 victory over never-say-die Manhattan
in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament. Now, the Monarchs
must travel Wednesday to Long Island, where the last
time there they were victimized by a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Aurimas Kieza in a 65-63 loss. Hofstra, which has not lost at home this season, earned its
spot in the quarterfinals with a 77-75 victory at Saint
Joseph
’s earlier Monday night.

Press Notes

The Monarchs (23-9) travel to Hempstead,
NY
to meet CAA
rival Hofstra. The winner earns a trip to Madison
Square Gardens

next week. ODU defeated Manhattan
Monday night, 70-66, while Hofstra beat St.
Joseph
’s, 77-75 in overtime. Four of the five meetings
between ODU and Hofstra
played in New York have been
decided by two points or less. Hofstra is the only
team to beat ODU in Norfolk
each of the last two years, while the Monarchs were the last team to win on the
Pride’s home court.

Miami-Michigan

Press Notes

The top-seeded University
of Michigan
(20-10) hosts the
third-seeded University of Miami
(18-15) in the quarterfinals of the NIT with the winner earning trip to Madison
Square Garden

for semifinals, March 28, against the winner of the Old Dominion-Hofstra quarterfinal game. Michigan
advanced to the quarterfinals with an 87-84 double-overtime win over Notre Dame
on Monday at Crisler Arena.

NBA

Hornets-Cavaliers

Cleveland Plain Dealer

The Charlotte Bobcats bring the NBA’s second-worst road
record – 6-28 – to The Q tonight. It should make everyone in the Cavaliers’
front office nervous. The Cavaliers are 24-10 at home, but three of the losses
have been to teams – New York, Atlanta,
Golden State
– that rank among the league’s worst on the road. The Knicks, 6-26 away from
Madison Square Garden, handed the Cavaliers a 92-84 defeat at The Q in
mid-January; the Hawks, 7-25 away from Philips Arena, rolled out of Cleveland
with a 100-94 victory in mid-December; the Warriors, 10-21 on the road, knocked
off the Cavaliers, 99-91, at The Q in mid-February.

Knicks-Magic

Orlando Sentinel

Orlando is
returning home to face former Magic G Steve Francis, who was traded last month
to the Knicks. New York is having
a nightmare season. Not only do the Knicks have one of the worst records in the
league, but controversies hit the tabloids nearly every day. The latest was a
feud between G Stephon Marbury
and Coach Larry Brown.

Bulls-Pacers

USA Today

The Pacers have dropped three of their last four games and
now lead the Milwaukee Bucks by just percentage points for sixth place in the
Eastern Conference. The Bulls – losers of three in a row – are in ninth place,
2 ½ games behind the Philadelphia
76ers for the final playoff spot and five games in back of the Pacers and
Bucks. Indiana has lost its last
two games by double-digit margins, 103-88 Sunday to Boston
and 105-75 Tuesday at Memphis. The
30-point margin at Memphis was Indiana’s
second-most lopsided defeat of the season, and its worst since a 122-90 loss
Nov. 16 at Charlotte.

Villanova-Boston College

Press Notes

When Villanova plays Boston
College
on Friday, it will be a
showdown between two teams who used to meet regularly during the Big East
Conference regular season slate. The Eagles played their first season as a
member of the ACC this season. Villanova is 51-24 all-time against Boston
College
, including two wins last
season. The Wildcats are 35-34 (.507) all-time against ACC teams, not including
its record against recent additions to the conference Boston
College
, Miami
(Fla.) and Virginia Tech. This
season, the Big East is 4-4 against the ACC.

George Mason-Wichita
State

Hutchinson News

One month and two days ago, Wichita
State
and George Mason squared off
in a Bracket Buster contest in Wichita.Wichita
State
, playing in the NCAA
Tournament for the first time in 18 years, advanced to the round of 16 with an
80-73 victory over Tennessee on
Saturday. Both teams had RPIs in the 20s when they
played on Feb. 18. Four days before that, Wichita State arguably won its
biggest game of the Missouri Valley Conference season when Matt Braeuer hit a 3-pointer with less than a second left in
overtime to defeat Creighton. The George Mason game ended in a similar fashion
as Tony Skinn hit a 3-pointer from the right wing
with 10 seconds left for a 70-67 victory.

Florida-Georgetown

Herald Tribune

The Gators barely had to break a sweat to win both games
this past weekend to not only get to the Sweet 16 but also end all the talk
about the program underachieving in the NCAA tournament. They beat South
Alabama
by 26 points in the first round Thursday, then cruised to a 22-point win over UW-M Saturday to make it
out of the first weekend for the first time since 2000. On Saturday, the nation’s
top field goal percentage shooting team hit 54 percent of its shots while hounding
the Panthers with a tight defense. It resulted in Florida’s
seventh straight win, and the Gators have not trailed in their last 136
minutes, dating back to early in the second half of their win over LSU in the Southeastern Conference tournament semis.

Washington-Connecticut

Spokane Review

Connecticut
may be the most talented team in the country. But like Washington,
UConn lost its first Big East tournament game (to Syracuse),
then struggled to beat 16th-seed Albany
72-59 and held off Kentucky.

There is not question the road favorites have been playing

though has had two days to adjust while the Clippers are playing in back to

CBB

South Carolina-Florida
State

Times and Democrat

And the Seminoles will be hobbled as well for Tuesday’s
game with leading scorer Al Thornton battling a lower back problem and point
guard Todd Galloway bothered by an ankle sprain suffered Thursday in the win
over Butler. The Gamecocks (19-15)
are trying to become the second team to win consecutive NIT titles since St.
John’s
in 1943 and 1944. But they’ll have to do it
with just eight men and on the road against a Florida
State
team that has won its last 12
nonconference home games. South
Carolina
coach Dave Odom announced Monday he
suspended Antoine Tisby indefinitely for violating
team rules and reserves Osumane Konate and Keving Palacios will miss the game with injuries.

Minnesota-Cincinnati

St. Pioneer Press

Cincinnati
(20-12) hosts Minnesota (16-14)
tonight in the second round of the National Invitational Tournament. The
Bearcats have shown resilience this year, bouncing back after losing five of
six games to finish 8-8 in their first Big East Conference season. They
finished the regular season with a home victory over West Virginia and were on
their way to beating Syracuse in the first round of the Big East tournament
before Gerry McNamara foiled them with a last-second three-pointer. The loss to
Syracuse probably cost the Bearcats
a chance at an NCAA tournament at-large bid. Having gone over the possibilities
in his head several times in the past week, Kennedy can’t understand why Cincinnati’s
resume wasn’t good enough. The Bearcats had a strength of schedule in the top
five and a top 40 Ratings Percentage Index.

NBA

Nets-Wizards

Newark Star Ledger

Since Dec. 16, the Wizards and Nets are fourth and fifth
in the league, respectively, in transition points.

Magic-Bobcats

Charlotte.com

Charlotte Bobcats point guard Brevin Knight will miss tonight’s game against the Orlando Magic, and
probably Wednesday’s game in Cleveland,
with a sore groin. Knight sat out Monday’s practice with the injury, which he
said has troubled him for about two weeks. He anticipates playing in Miami
on Friday. With Knight out, the Bobcats figure to move rookie Raymond Felton to the point and start Kareem Rush at shooting guard.

Rockets-Mavericks

Dallas Morning News

Rockets: Tracy McGrady says he’s
essentially done for the season, unless the Rockets somehow have a shot at the
playoffs in the final week. McGrady’s back issues
should be solved before next season, but that doesn’t make the mess that this
season has turned into any easier to swallow. Mavs
haven’t lost consecutive games since Nov. 29 and Dec. 1. They’ve gone 42-10
since then.
