Lipscomb-UTEP

Press Notes

The Bisons, regular season
champions in the Atlantic Sun Conference, are seeded No. 10 in their first ever
trip to national postseason play on the NCAA Division I level. The Bisons are 21-10 this season. Texas-El Paso from Conference
USA, is 20-9, including a 14-2 home record.

El Paso Times

The Miners have not played in the NIT since 2001, when
they defeated McNeese
State
at home in the opener and
lost at Memphis in the second
round. Lipscomb, formerly an NAIA school, is making
its first national post-season basketball appearance. The Bisons
won seven of their final nine games, losing in overtime to Belmont
in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament championship game. UTEP is excited to play … not happy about getting a poor
seed. Lipscomb is excited to play … not so happy about the location.
”They said we were going to play in our geographical area,” Lipscomb coach
Scott Sanderson told the school’s web site. “I guess they meant the United
States
.”

Miami Oh-Butler

Press Notes

The Bulldogs (19-12) finished runner-up in the Horizon
League regular season race and then fell in the championship game of the
Horizon League tournament to UW-Milwaukee. Miami
(18-10) tied for second place in the East Division of the Mid-American
Conference. Butler is making its
first postseason tournament appearance since 2003, when the Bulldogs advanced
to the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Division I Championship.
The Bulldogs have been in postseason play in eight of the past 10 years,
including bids to the NIT in 1999 and 2002. Butler
will make its eighth NIT postseason appearance overall.

Stanford-Virginia

Press Notes

The Cardinal are 3-1 against Virginia
in the series and have won the last two. Stanford is 2-0 versus the Cavaliers
at home.

Times Dispatch

That first-year coach Dave Leitao’s
team would have to head west on such short notice surprised U.Va.
officials, who didn’t learn of the matchup until the
tournament draw was posted on the NIT’s Web site
around 9:30 last night. Virginia and
Stanford haven’t met since Dec. 22,
1994
, when the Cardinal won 64-60 at University Hall. Stanford
leads the series 3-1. For U.Va., this will be its fifth trip to the NIT in the past seven
seasons. The Wahoos returned to Charlottesville
on Saturday from Greensboro, N.C.,
where, as the ACC tournament’s seventh-seeded team, they beat 10th-seeded
Virginia Tech in the first round and then lost to second-seeded North
Carolina
in the quarterfinals.

Akron-Temple

Press Notes

Temple enters
the tournament with a 17-14 record.  The
Owls advanced to the Atlantic 10 Tournament semifinals with wins over
eighth-seeded Rhode Island
(74-45) and top-seeded and sixth-ranked George Washington (68-53).  Saint Joseph’s
ended Temple’s run to the
championship with a 73-59 win in the semifinal round. Akron
enters the NIT with a 22-9 record, finishing second in the MAC East Division with
a 14-4 record.  Junior forward Romeo
Travis leads a balanced attack with a 13.5 scoring average.  Akron
is making its first postseason appearance since a NIT invite in 1989.

Farleigh Dickinson-Manhattan

Press Notes

The Knights are 20-11, and won the Northeast Conference
Regular Season Championship with a 14-4 NEC record. FDU
and the Jaspers have four common opponents this season, with the Knights
posting wins over Canisius and St. Francis-N.Y. but
losing to Seton Hall and Saint Peter’s. Manhattan
beat St. Francis-N.Y., split the season series with
Canisius, took two of three meetings with Saint Peter’s, and lost to Seton
Hall. This is the second NIT appearance the for the Jaspers under 2006 MAAC Coach of the Year Bobby Gonzalez, and the fourth
postseason appearance in his seven years at the helm of the Kelly Green. Manhattan
lost to Villanova in the 2002 NIT in the Jaspers’ last appearance. The Jaspers
are making their 18th overall NIT appearance. The game will mark the
24th meeting between the two programs, with the last meeting taking
place six games into the Bobby Gonzalez era at Manhattan,
a 74-70 FDU win at Draddy
Gym. The Jaspers hold a 15-8 advantage in the overall series, with the Knights
having won the last six meetings.

GA Southern-Charlotte

Columbus Ledger-Enquirer

Georgia
Southern is the only men’s team in the state to make the postseason, receiving
a spot in the National Invitation Tournament on Sunday night. The Eagles (20-9)
will open the 40-team tournament at Charlotte
(18-12) on Tuesday. Georgia
Southern had the best record in the Southern Conference during the regular
season, but lost to Appalachian State 74-61 in the opening round of the league
tournament.

Rutgers-Penn State

Newark Star Ledger

Rutgers coach Gary Waters, who
announced his resignation two weeks ago effective at the end of the season,
will officially step down with the Knights’ next loss. Rutgers could get a
boost for the game, with Waters saying he will know today whether promising
freshman forward JR Inman, out since Feb. 5 with a broken bone in his leg, will
be available to return. The extra game also gives Quincy Douby,
the Big East’s leading scorer at 25.1 ppg, a chance to break the school’s
single-season scoring record of 807 held by Bob Lloyd. The junior guard has 777
points this year.

KNICKS +2’ Nuggets

This is a tough one for Denver
thanks to the schedule maker.  In the
midst of a difficult seven game road trip, the Nugs
are off a brutal loss in which they faltered down the stretch.

True the Knicks have been pathetic, but the worst team
money can buy actually has won 2-of-3 SU all on the road.  The Knicks have won three straight at home in
the series and 4-of-5.

NBA

Magic-Pacers

Orlando Sentinel

Orlando has
won its past two games—beating the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State
Warriors—by comfortable margins. Both wins came at home, and the Magic are
seeking their first road victory since Jan. 26, when they beat the Sixers at Philadelphia
in overtime. Indiana, which lost
Sunday in Toronto against the
Raptors, is third in the Central Division behind the Detroit Pistons and the
Cavs. The Pacers are 18-10 at home. The Magic started their season by losing to
the Pacers in Orlando 90-78 and
finish the season against the Pacers in Indiana
on April 19. The Magic will be somewhat rested after taking Sunday off while
the Pacers played in Toronto. Key
might be the defensive job Orlando
does on SG Stephen Jackson.

Nuggets-Knicks

Daily Camera

The Nuggets lead the two-game season series 1-0 after a
95-86 home win in November. The Nuggets own a three-game losing streak in the
Big Apple, having not won in New York
since March 25, 2002.  The Boston Celtics halted the Nuggets’
four-game win streak by handing Denver
a 106-101 loss Sunday. New York’s
17-44 record is the worst in the NBA and a humiliating mark for the team with
the NBA’s highest payroll at $125 million.

Hawks-Bucks

JS Online

Even though the Bucks have lost seven of 10 games since
the all-star break and have seen their record dip to 30-32, they remain in the
playoff picture in the Eastern Conference. The Bucks will take a five-game home
losing streak into tonight’s game against the Atlanta Hawks at the Bradley
Center
. It’s the first of six
straight games against teams with losing records.

Nets-Rockets

USA Today

Houston
dropped to 2-14 this season without McGrady after an
88-81 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday. The Rockets’ leading scorer has
had back trouble all season and could be out for the next five weeks after
aggravating the injury March 5 in a 102-84 win over Portland.

Timberwolves-Clippers

TwinCities.com

Perhaps it will be here that the Timberwolves
make one last stand, or fall apart completely. The four days in this city that
began Sunday could provide one last opportunity to come together, even as Kevin
Garnett’s tongue lashing still rings in their ears. Garnett erupted in a
profanity-laced scolding Saturday night in Phoenix
when some of his teammates joked around in the locker room after a 110-102 loss
to the Suns. Garnett said after the game that he felt some of his teammates
took the loss lightly, something he found infuriating.

SACRAMENTO -2’ Dallas

The Kings are on a roll winning 6-of-7 SU but only two
games were at home.  The smallest margin
of victory was seven. Dallas is in  a brutal stretch. Tonight will be the second of four games in five nights in
four cities. The only home game in the bunch is Tuesday against
Cleveland. “Back-to- backs are challenging,” coach
Avery Johnson said. “We’re in a tough stretch playing a lot of games in a short
period of time.” Five of the Mavs’ 13 losses have
come in the second of back-to-back games.

The Kings are playing their best defense of their world.
In the last 10 games, opponents are averaging 95.1 points, more than three
below the Kings’ defensive average.

Duke needs a statement before the tourney having lost two

Ohio State-Indiana

Press Notes

The seventh-ranked Buckeyes continue their push for a Big
Ten tournament title and possible top seed in the NCAA tournament Friday when
they face hometown favorite Indiana
at Conseco Field house in Indianapolis.
The top-seeded Buckeyes (24-4) struggled to put away Penn
State
63-56 in the opening game of
the quarterfinals. Ohio State
has won six straight games and 10 of its last 11. Indiana
(18-10), the fifth seed, also rallied Thursday to win its quarterfinal game.
Marco Killingsworth and Marshall Strickland combined
for 28 second-half points as the Hoosiers defeated Wisconsin
61-56 for their fifth consecutive win since coach Mike
Davis announced his resignation, effective at season’s end.

Wake Forest-Duke

Press Notes

The Blue Devils (28-3) struggled against Miami
– a team that closed the regular season by losing six of seven – but pulled out
an 80-76 victory in Friday’s quarterfinals. Duke did manage to bounce back from
consecutive losses to end the regular season, 79-74 at Florida
State
on March 1 and 83-76 at home
to No. 10 North Carolina last Saturday. Duke won both
meetings with Wake this season, including a 93-70 victory in
Durham on Feb. 14. The Blue Devils have won three straight in the
series since dropping three of four.

Kentucky-South Carolina

Amnews

Kentucky
beat South Carolina twice during
the season, including an 80-78 decision Jan. 21 when Rajon
Rondo hit an off-balanced 3-pointer in the final seconds.

Texas A&M-Texas

Associated Press

For what the Aggies did on
Friday in the second round of the Big 12 tournament was absolutely carve up
Ricardo Patton’s Buffaloes from Colorado, 86-53, for their eighth win in a row,
which is a run far more impressive than the 10-0 record they put together at
season’s start against, for the most part, a bunch of SWAC
teams. There aren’t many hotter teams in the country right now, which is the
most critical test period as far as the folks who hand out NCAA Tournament
invitations are concerned. If the Aggies weren’t
already on the list, they are now.
