Rodgers was expected to fill scoring void for Arizona
this season left by Salim Stoudamire’s

Princeton-Cornell

Press Notes

Cornell, who enters the weekend in third place in the
Ancient Eight standings with a 5-3 record, faces second place Princeton.

Akron-Nevada

Press Notes

Following a 50-49 come-from-behind victory over Louisiana
Tech on Monday night, the Nevada Wolf Pack (19-5, 9-3 WAC)
takes a break from conference action to play host to Mid-American Conference
East Division leader Akron (19-5,
12-2 MAC) on Friday night in the BracketBusters. Akron
brings a 19-5 overall record into Friday night’s game with the Wolf Pack and
has won 14 of its last 16 games.

Saturday, February
18, 2006

Arizona State-California

Press Notes

ASU leads the Cal
series 31-29 as the home team has won 21 of the past 29 games, but the Golden
Bears won in Tempe on Jan. 19 88-58 in a game that was
somewhat closer than the final score would indicate. ASU
ranks first in the league in three-point percentage, hitting 122-of-311 (.392),

Washington State-Oregon

Press Notes

Oregon
is 11-14 overall, 5-8 in the Pacific-10. Oregon
leads the Pac-10 in 3-point field goals made (6.60 per game). In the series the
Ducks have won last nine meetings and 17 of the last 18. Oregon
has won 10 straight over WSU in Eugene.

Connecticut-Seton Hall

Press Notes

The Huskies were 11-0 before losing Jan. 3 at Marquette
in their Big East opener. They won 11 straight again before the Villanova loss.
The Huskies have little time to dwell on the loss. The Villanova game was the
second in a three-game Big East road trip. It began at Seton Hall and ends
Saturday at No. 11 West Virginia, now tied with Villanova atop the 16-team conference. The league historically has tried to avoid
scheduling teams for three straight road games but with more teams this season,
it’s more frequent.

Toledo-Detroit

Press Notes

The Rockets will be looking to match their season-best win
streak of four games with a win over the Titans. UT will have a formidable
challenge on its hands to do that as Detroit
has posted a 10-1 win-loss mark on its homecourt this season. Toledo
is coming off a perfect three-game homestand during
which it posted wins over Central Michigan (78-62), Kent
State
(60-44) and Bowling Green (72-64). During this
stretch, the Rockets registered a 53.1 FG% and
limited their opponents to a 41.2 shooting mark.

New Mexico State-Pacific

Press Notes

Pacific is 18-6 overall, 8-2 in the Big West Conference. New
Mexico
State
,
former member of the Big West Conference, is 10-12 overall, 6-5 in the Western
Athletic Conference. The Aggies hold a 27-8 edge in
the all-time series, although the Tigers have a 9-6 series edge in Stockton.

KANSAS STATE +3’ Texas Tech
These teams are mirror images of each other but with K State a slight edge. Also the dogs will have extra inspiration tonight. Coach Jim Wooldridge is scheduled to make his return tonight, exactly one week after undergoing surgery to remove a bulging disk in his neck. In game where the road team is slightly better and with extra stimulation, the normal HCA of 3.0 points says there are too many points being laid here.

Auburn-Tennessee
Press Notes
The Auburn game is the lone home game in a stretch where Tennessee plays four of five games on the road. In all, four of UT’s last seven regular season games are on the road.
UT leads the SEC and ranks sixth nationally in scoring offense with an average of 82.4 points per game. In league play, Tennessee’s 80.1 points per game also lead the SEC.
Tennessee has won its last seven SEC contests, its longest conference winning streak since 1981-82. UT owns an SEC-best 14-game home winning streak that includes a 12-0 home record this season. Auburn dropped to 10-11 on the season and 2-8 in SEC action with a 64-84 loss at Arkansas Saturday.
Associated Press
Looking to win its 15th straight game at Thompson-Boling Arena on Wednesday night, Tennessee faces an Auburn team that has yet to win on the road this season. The No. 8 Volunteers (18-3, 9-1 SEC) are 12-0 at home in 2005-06 under first-year coach Bruce Pearl, winning by an average of 15 points at Thompson-Boling. Tennessee hasn’t lost at Knoxville since an 84-73 defeat to Florida on Feb. 12, 2005. The 14-game run is the Vols’ longest home win streak since they won 17 in a row from Jan. 15-Feb. 3, 2001.
Tennessee brought its winning ways to the road in the last two games, defeating Kentucky and Georgia to give it seven straight victories going into Wednesday. While Tennessee leads the league with 82.4 points per game, Auburn (10-11, 2-8) ranks last in the conference with a 64.7 average. The Tigers are 0-8 on the road, losing those games by an average of nearly 18 points.
Virginia Commonwealth-Towson State
Times Dispatch
VCU apparently won’t have to worry about Towson guard Gary Neal tonight. Neal, who torched the Rams for 36 points in the first meeting, suffered a foot injury Feb. 4 against Drexel. The transfer from La Salle, who is averaging 27.1 ppg, aggravated the injury against James Madison on Thursday and missed Saturday’s game against George Mason. “He has not been able to practice and we do not expect him to play against VCU,” Towson coach Pat Kennedy said on yesterday’s CAA conference call.
St. Louis-Duquesne
Press Notes
Saint Louis dropped a gut-wrenching 46-44 loss at Dayton on Sat., Feb. 11, when Flyers guard Brian Roberts dropped in a fadeaway jumper with 3.6 seconds remaining. The Billikens had rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit to tie the game with 32 seconds remaining. Located in Pittsburgh, Duquesne (3-19, 1-10) had its potential for a successful season take a huge hit when an injury ended forward Kieron Achara’s season. The Billikens had their season-high three-game winning streak snapped at Dayton. Through games of Feb. 12, the Billikens’ 10 losses have been to teams with a 150-76 record and .664 winning percentage – George Washington (20-1), Gonzaga (20-3), Iowa (19-6), UW-Milwaukee (17-6), North Carolina (15-6), Ole Miss (13-10), Richmond (11-12), Hawaii (13-8), Dayton (12-13) and Saint Joseph’s (10-11).The RPI rates the Bills’ schedule strength as 47th-toughest in the country. Only Saint Joseph’s (third) has a more difficult schedule in the A-10.
Utah State-Idaho
Press Notes
Utah State is 5-0 on the year and 34-7 over the last seven years following a loss. Over that time period, USU has lost back-to-back games just seven times. Over the last seven years, Utah State is 39-19 (.672) on the road in league play and 40-26 (.606) all-time on the road under head coach Stew Morrill in conference games. USU’s overall road record under Morrill is 53-39 (.576). Utah State is 91-24 (.791) in league games over the last seven years and it has won 39 of its last 49 conference games dating back to the 2002-03 season. Utah State is 40-15 (.727) in the month of February under Morrill, which includes a 18-12 (.600) road record. Utah State ranks first in the WAC and second in the nation both field goal percentage (.509), and three-point field goal percentage (.432).
Cincinnati-Syracuse
Press Notes
Cincinnati, 16-9 overall, is in ninth place in the BIG EAST standings with a 5-6 record, following Sunday’s 89-69 loss to No. 13 Pittsburgh. The top 12 teams qualify for the tournament. Syracuse, 17-7 overall, is a notch ahead of the Bearcats in the league standings with a 5-5 ledger. The Orange defeated St. John’s, 75-60, on Sunday. Syracuse is 12-3 in the Carrier Dome this season and has an all-time record in the Dome of 356-69 (.838). What a difference a month makes. When Cincinnati and Syracuse met in Cincinnati on Jan. 14, the Bearcats were No. 25 in the Associated Press poll while Syracuse was No. 24 in the ESPN rankings. Wednesday’s game will feature two of the nation’s top shot-blocking teams. Syracuse was ranked No. 6 in the most recent NCAA statistics, averaging 7.0 rejections per outing Cincinnati is ranked 15th nationally in blocked shots (5.75). Cavaliers-Celtics
Boston Globe
With his left knee swollen and unable to bend beyond a 90-degree angle, Wally Szczerbiak sat and watched Celtics practice yesterday. He left the team practice facility uncertain whether he will play tonight against LeBron James and the Cavaliers at the TD Banknorth Garden. Asked what would be the deciding factor, Szczerbiak said, ”Whether I can run.” He couldn’t do that yesterday, necessitating a second day of rest and therapy.

Arizona State-California
Press Notes
ASU leads the Cal series 31-29 as the home team has won 21 of the past 29 games, but the Golden Bears won in Tempe on Jan. 19 88-58 in a game that was somewhat closer than the final score would indicate. ASU ranks first in the league in three-point percentage, hitting 122-of-311 (.392),
Washington State-Oregon
Press Notes
If Washington State wins at Oregon Saturday, the current Cougar senior class (Randy Green) will be the first at WSU to defeat all nine Pac-10 opponents since 1989. Oregon is 11-14 overall, 5-8 in the Pacific-10. Oregon leads the Pac-10 in 3-point field goals made (6.60 per game). In the series the Ducks have won last nine meetings and 17 of the last 18. Oregon has won 10 straight over WSU in Eugene.
Connecticut-Seton Hall
Press Notes
The Huskies were 11-0 before losing Jan. 3 at Marquette in their Big East opener. They won 11 straight again before the Villanova loss. The Huskies have little time to dwell on the loss. The Villanova game was the second in a three-game Big East road trip. It began at Seton Hall and ends Saturday at No. 11 West Virginia, now tied with Villanova atop the 16-team conference. The league historically has tried to avoid scheduling teams for three straight road games but with more teams this season, it’s more frequent.

LOYOLA MARYLAND +4’ Siena
Siena will have to guys banged up tonight and one may not play. Tay Fisher is slowed down from a Sunday injury. Kenny Hasbrouck, who bruised his right knee will play but be less than 100 percent. Before injuring himself, Fisher played his best game of the season against Rider, scoring 17 points in the first half.
If Fisher by chance can’t play Siena will have to go with some inexperienced players. Losing Fisher would also bump freshman guard Joao Braga into the rotation. Braga has made just eight appearances, almost all of them with the game already decided. In his only extended action, against Saint Peter’s on Jan. 19, Braga collected two assists in seven minutes.
“I think I’m ready,” Braga said. “I try to just be prepared and not get really anxious. But I can’t lie. I’m always expecting to get in at any time. I’ll be prepared no matter what.”
Whatever form the Siena backcourt takes, it faces one of its most difficult challenges in Loyola guard Andre Collins, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s leading scorer with 26.7 points per game.
