Quarterback Daunte Culpepper is
expected to play longer in Saturday’s Dolphins preseason game at Tampa
Bay
than he did last week, and
defensive end Jason Taylor should see his first action of the preseason. That
seems uncomplicated, in part, because Dolphins coach Nick Saban
on Thursday clarified his philosophy for using his starters in the preseason. “We
play the guys a certain amount of plays in the first game, and we usually build
on that,” Saban said. “And we will build on that
against Tampa Bay,
to some degree. Starters will play a little bit longer. “So if they played 12
to 15 plays last time, they’ll play a third more plays this time. It’s not
etched in stone, but they’ll get a little more work.” Saban
then said that players who participated in six to eight plays last week would
play about 12 to 14 this week. Saban said he was not
referring to any specific players, but Culpepper took part in six plays against
Jacksonville in the preseason
opener. Saban makes the ultimate decision about
whether players play and how much. He apparently has made that decision about
Taylor and receiver Marty Booker, who also missed the preseason opener because
of a calf strain. “There’s a few guys,” Saban said, “that
have been practicing that didn’t play in the last game that will play in this
game as long as they continue to make progress and don’t have any setbacks
between now and then.” Linebacker Zach Thomas, like most starters, will see his
playing time increase this weekend.

The No. 1 weakness on the NFL’s reigning No. 1 defense
belongs to the last line of defense. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost safety
Dexter Jackson to the Cincinnati Bengals via free agency, which means Will
Allen, a third-year pro with just eight NFL starts to his credit, will be
starting alongside five-year veteran Jermaine
Phillips. Behind them on the depth chart: four players who combine for just
eight years of pro experience and one start.

The Jaguars will spend more time watching their own
players in Saturday night’s exhibition against Carolina
than worrying about the Panthers’ schemes. “If you and I played checkers right
now, I’d want to win,” Jags Coach Jack Del Rio said. “That’s why you play—to
win—but we also have to evaluate.”

Charlotte Observer

Panthers coach John
Fox
said the team would stick to its normal schedule for allotting
playing time in the second exhibition, at Jacksonville on Saturday. The
starters will play “roughly the first half,” Fox said Thursday. “We plan on
getting somewhere near halftime with our regulars, and then next week it will
be roughly the first three quarters, and the last week it will probably be a
series to a quarter.”

Mike McCarthy wants to get that edge back, and even though
it’s only a preseason game, for the first-year head coach the process starts
Saturday night against the Atlanta Falcons. “For our football team, I think it’s
critical that we get off on the right foot of creating that Lambeau advantage,”
McCarthy said. “Home-field advantage is obviously critical in the National
Football League.” For this first home preseason game, McCarthy said he plans to
play the starters about two quarters.
Much like San Diego, Atlanta
will attack the Packers’ young interior on the offensive line with an
experienced defensive front. The Falcons’ line includes three Pro Bowlers in
tackle Rod Coleman and ends Patrick Kerney and John
Abraham.

Scout.com

Head coach Mike McCarthy said today that the Green Bay
Packers will focus on running the ball more efficiently Saturday night in the
57th annual Midwest Shrine game at Lambeau Field against the Atlanta
Falcons. The Packers struggled last Saturday against San
Diego
behind their young offensive line. Green
Bay
averaged just 2.4 yards per rush in their new
zone-blocking.

Associated Press

The Vikings may not have to be ready for Roethlisberger,
who played only one series against Arizona
and may not get even that Saturday. On Wednesday, he sprained the right thumb
he initially hurt late last season, so it seems unlikely he would play. Charlie
Batch, the backup who won both of his starts when Roethlisberger injured a knee
last season, will start if Roethlisberger can’t go. Cowher hopes to give his
starters a quarter’s worth of playing time to sharpen them up. The Vikings’
starters might play into the second quarter, though their fans are eager to get
a second look before that at Jackson, the fast, deceptive rookie from Alabama
State
. While starting quarterback
Brad Johnson’s play wasn’t a disappointment – he was 5-of-6 for 32 yards while
running the Vikings’ West Coast-type offense – Jackson
got the home crowd going by going 7-of-13 for 60 yards and scrambling for 36
yards while playing slightly more than one quarter. The Vikings may not have to

Childress said Brad Johnson and the starters would play a
quarter and a half against the Steelers and that the Vikings’ fourth
quarterback, J.T. O’Sullivan, would not play. Pittsburgh
quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has a sprained ligament in his right thumb and
is questionable for the game against the Vikings.

Jets quarterback Chad Pennington missed practice yesterday
because of a “family illness” and his status for tomorrow night’s preseason
game at Washington is uncertain.
If Pennington is unavailable, former Redskins quarterback Patrick Ramsey may
get the start. Ramsey spent four seasons with the Redskins before the Jets
acquired him for a sixth-round pick in March. Jets coach Eric Mangini said he has been and will stay in constant contact
with Pennington and is unsure if he’ll play against the Redskins.

The small line does not add up.  True Ian Snell has actually been respectable
on the road, but Bruce Kison he is not. The Pirates
are 14-45 -25.1 units on the road this year.
They are 8-31 overall to lefties -22.3.  Since last year, it’s 11-41 to southpaws.

We are aware that Chris Michalak
is the poster child for “journeyman” but Pittsburgh
is the poster child for horrific road team. They are hitting just .245 on the
highway.  The Reds are 5-1 in the series.

Bengals-Bills

Bengals.com

In his first news conference at Paul Brown Stadium since
the club broke training camp, Lewis said Tuesday Palmer doesn’t have to play
Friday night in Buffalo in order to
start the Sept. 10 regular-season opener and he said they’ll decide later in
the week if Palmer goes against the Bills. But if Palmer doesn’t play any
preseason games, he won’t start against the Chiefs to begin the season,
although he said Palmer continues to get the majority of snaps. They will also
make a call later this week on whether defensive tackle Sam Adams can play in Buffalo.
Safety Anthony Mitchell (sprained foot) is out for Friday while left tackle
Levi Jones (sprained knee) is day-to-day. Linebacker David Pollack (hamstring)
and cornerback Deltha O’Neal (hand) are defensive
starters who should be ready to play after missing Sunday night’s game,
according to Lewis. Wide receivers Antonio Chatman (groin) and Bennie Brazell (hamstring) are also going to be ready to make
their Bengals debuts after missing the opener. Defensive lineman Jonathan Fanene (hamstring) could be ready for his first action, as
could cornerback Greg Brooks, day-to-day with a slight hamstring pull.

Lions-Browns

Detroit News

Charles Rogers will have one less opportunity to make an
impression in his battle to win a job with the Detroit Lions. Rogers, one of
several receivers competing for playing time and roster spots, will not play in
Friday night’s second exhibition at Cleveland
because of a sore knee. Coach Rod Marinelli said
after Thursday’s practice that Rogers
will not play. Rogers caught one
pass for seven yards in last week’s game with Denver.Dan
Orlovsky will be the No. 2 quarterback for the second
straight game with Josh McCown in the No. 3 spot, Marinelli said. Jon Kitna will
start.

The Independent

Center has been a Bermuda Triangle for the Browns since
training camp began. LeCharles Bentley suffered a
torn patellar tendon on the first play of camp
July
27. Bob Hallen
quit the team on Aug. 7 and officially retired four days later. Rob Smith,
buried deep on the depth chart when camp began, suffered a sever ankle sprain
in the preseason game against the Eagles and is out indefinitely. The injuries
were bad enough. Then word broke Tuesday that Alonzo Ephraim will be suspended
for the first four games by the NFL for a substance abuse violation.

Chargers-Bears

Chicago Tribune

Wednesday was spent with only Rex Grossman and Brian
Griese taking snaps, virtually all against “the cards” for San Diego’s defense,
which presents primarily a three-man front. Drills were at about half speed and
both quarterbacks were smooth delivering the ball interception-free. How much
Grossman will play Friday against the Chargers, the expectation is for the
first half. “As long as the 1’s are in there,” offensive coordinator Ron Turner
said, “he’ll be in there, more than last week.”

Associated Press

Bears Coach Lovie Smith dropped
Thomas Jones behind Cedric Benson, who is also sidelined with a shoulder
injury. Neither will play Friday night in Chicago’s
home exhibition opener at Soldier Field against the San Diego Chargers. Adrian
Peterson will be the starter. Whoever becomes the starter for the regular
season opener Sept. 10, the Bears need a better performance from quarterback
Rex Grossman as they tune up. Grossman was 3-of-11 for 47 yards in a 28-14 loss
to the San Francisco 49ers last
Friday night. His fumble was returned for a touchdown. Grossman is expected to
play the first half. The Chargers will be watching the continuing development
of first-year starter Philip Rivers, who was cool and crisp in a win against Green
Bay
in the exhibition opener last Saturday. Among the San
Diego
starters not expected to play are running back
LaDainian Tomlinson, who rarely plays in exhibitions, and linebacker Donnie
Edwards, who has a bad back. Tomlinson will be replaced by Michael Turner, who
was a star at Northern Illinois.

PHILADELPHIA (MATHIESON +107) NY Mets (Maine)

The Phillies have won 15-of-22 including three in a row in
this series. John Maine has been tremendous but it’s only his second road
start.  In his first, he gave up 4 ER in
4 IP. The Mets are hitting .218 their last seven games with a .292 OBP.  Philly is
hitting .315 their last seven games with a .387 OBP.
Going with a team in virtual pick ‘em games (line 125
or less either way), with a bullpen that pitches more than 3 2/3 IP per game,
with an ERA of 7.50 over his last three starts is 313-229 +96.2.
