ST. PETER’S -7 Canisius

Emotion is very tough to manufacture because it must be
genuine.  In college sports even more
than professional, it’s difficult to counter.

St. Pete’s will have an extra homecourt advantage as Keydren Clark, the best player nobody
heard of plays his final home game. Yet there is an extra stimulus for him. His
best friend and former teammate, George Jefferson, died last June of the same
heart condition that took the lives of former star players Reggie Lewis and
Hank Gathers.

Clark said he plans to wear two of Jefferson’s
accessories, an elbow pad and a leg sleeve, on Friday night to honor his
friend.

“He won’t be there physically to share it with me, but I
know he’ll be looking down on me,” Clark said. “I’m just
thankful and blessed that I had George in my life. We started out as friends,
then grew to be best friends and then we started doing everything together,
workouts, going to the movies, going to parties. We did everything two brothers
would do.”

The road has not been kind to Canisius. The Griffs have lost five straight on the road, all of which
were conference games. Canisius is 3-9 on the road this season, including 2-5
in conference games.  Also it’s not like
they can counter the emotion with extra focus on Clark.
Canisius is set to play against the third (Andre Collins) and fourth (Keydren Clark) leading scorers in the country this weekend.
It will be Senior Day for both players when the Griffs
come calling.

Harvard-Penn

Press Notes

Penn holds a 122-27 advantage in the all-time series and
has won eight straight against Harvard coming into the game. Harvard last
topped the Quakers during the 2001-02 season with a
78-75 overtime victory. The win marked consecutive home victories in the series
for Harvard. Harvard has not won at The Palestra
since the 1990-91 season with a 77-70 victory, a span
of 15 games.

Dartmouth-Princeton

Press Notes

Princeton has swept its home
weekend against Dartmouth and
Harvard 16 seasons in a row. The Tigers probably need to make it 17 in a row to
maintain their chances in an Ivy League season nearing its conclusion. The
Tigers (8-14, 6-3 Ivy), who sit two games behind league leader Penn with five
games remaining for each team, played a series of nailbiters
in their recently-concluded five-game road trip. Four of those games saw a
game-winning or game-tying shot attempt in the final three seconds of
regulation, and the Tigers won three of them. Dartmouth
(5-18, 3-7 Ivy) won just two of its first 18 games but has now won three of its
past five, including a sweep of Yale and Brown this past weekend.

NBA

Sonics-Magic

Orlando Sentinel

Orlando has
lost its past eight games and, in a prevailing theme, is riddled with injuries.
F Hedo Turkoglu (sprained
left ankle) might play tonight. F Grant Hill (lower abdominal strain) will not
play until next week’s trip West. Seattle
is coming off a victory against the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday. But the Sonics,
coached by former Magic assistant Bob Hill, have lost eight of their past 10
games and have virtually no shot at a playoff berth. The Sonics made two trades
Thursday, acquiring PG Earl Watson, SF Bryon Russell and a second-round pick
from the Denver Nuggets and sending PF Reggie Evans to Denver and C Vitaly Potapenko to Portland as
part of a four-team nine-player trade. They also acquired G Mike Wilks. The last time the teams met, the Sonics beat the
Magic in Seattle on Jan. 11, a game
marred by a fight between G Ray Allen and Magic G Keyon
Dooling. Dooling was
suspended for five games and Allen for three games.

Wizards-Cavaliers

Scorephone.com

Washington,
which has won six of its last eight games, is six games behind the Miami Heat
for the top spot in the Southwest Division. It will travel for 17 of its final
31 games, including 12 of the last 16 of the regular season. The Wizards are
just 8-16 as the guest in 2005-06.

Spurs-Grizzlies

San Antonio Express-News

The Spurs won both of their previous meetings with Memphis,
holding the Grizzlies to an average of 81 points in the two games. Memphis
had a four-game winning streak snapped Thursday night in Dallas.
The winning streak was preceded by a stretch that saw the Grizzlies lose 12 of
15 games. Memphis entered Thursday’s
game ranked first in the league in scoring defense, allowing 87.7 points per
game.

NORTHWESTERN +4 Wisconsin

Wisconsin played three of their first four conference games at home, but they
knew the end of the year was payback time.
They must play three of their final four games on the road and that’s
after a big and emotional win over
Ohio State.
This is a proverbial sandwich game.

True they had
a week off to emotionally come down, but we look for some early rust on the
road tonight.

NBA

Pistons-Pacers

Associated Press

The Indiana Pacers say they don’t need to make noise
before Thursday’s trade deadline. They made enough by adding Peja Stojakovic last month. The
Pacers have won six of eight since sending Ron Artest
to the Sacramento Kings for Stojakovic. Indiana
is 27-23 heading into a stretch of 10 games that includes eight on the road,
starting Thursday night at Detroit.
The Pacers lost their last six games in January and have been without injured
starters Jermaine O’Neal, Austin Croshere
and Jamaal Tinsley for the whole month of February.

Grizzlies-Mavericks

Dallas Morning News

Dallas has won
nine consecutive games when shooting below 44 percent. Half and quarter
bettors: The bench is outscoring opposing reserves by an average of 18 points
in the last 17 games.

Utah State-Boise

Press Notes

Utah State
has won 14 of its last 17 games after starting the year with a 4-3 record.  Over the last seven years, Utah
State
is 40-19 (.678) on the road
in league play and 41-26 (.612) all-time on the road under head coach Stew Morrill
(separated at birth from world class handicapper the Animal) in conference
games. USU’s overall road record under Morrill is
54-39 (.581).  Utah State is 92-24 (.793)
in league games over the last seven years and it has won 40 of its last 50
conference games dating back to the 2002-03 season. Utah
State
is 42-15 (.737) in the month
of February under Morrill, which includes a 19-12 (.613) road record. Utah
State
leads the nation in
three-point field goal percentage (.431) and ranks second in the country in
overall field goal percentage (.510). USU is also
second in the nation in assists per game (18.46). Utah State is 18-6 on the season and in third-place in the Western
Athletic Conference with an 8-4 league record following its 80-42 win at
Idaho and its 66-63 non-conference win against Northwestern State last weekend. Utah State and Boise State will be meeting for the 23rd time this week
with the Aggies owning a 17-5 all-time record against
the Broncos, which includes a 4-5 road record.
Boise State is 13-12 on the year and in seventh-place in the Western
Athletic Conference with a 5-8 league record. The Broncos snapped a three-game
losing streak by defeating Cal State Northridge 82-71 at home in its last game.
Boise State is 9-4 at home this year.

George Mason-Hofstra

Press Notes

The George Mason men’s basketball team takes the court
tonight as a ranked school for the first time in school history. The 25th-ranked
Patriots will need to be at the top of their game if they want to avoid losing
for the first time as a ranked team. For the third straight road game, Mason
plays in an arena in which the opposition rarely experiences the joy of
winning. Against Virginia Commonwealth,
Mason handed the Rams their only home-loss of the year. Against Wichita
State
, Mason became the first
non-conference school to win there this season. Now Mason faces Hofstra, which has the third-longest active home winning
streak in the nation, having defeated 18 straight visitors. Mason hasn’t won at
Hofstra since Feb.
9, 2002
. The Pride (20-5, 12-4) are the
second-highest scoring team in the CAA behind
Northeastern and the second-best shooting team in the conference after Mason. Hofstra is converting on 46.1 percent of its shots and
averaging 74.4 points per game. Mason is shooting .486 from the field but has
attempted 79 fewer shots, averaging 69.7 points per game. Where the teams
differ greatly is on the defensive end. Mason (21-5, 14-2) is sixth in the
nation in field-goal percentage defense (.378) and eighth in scoring defense (57.9).
Hofstra is sixth in the CAA
in field-goal percentage defense (.425) and scoring defense (67.6). Mason has
held 23 straight opponents to fewer than 70 points. Hofstra
has allowed 10 of its past 23 opponents to score 70 or more.

South Carolina-Georgia

Press Notes

The Bulldogs are seeking to stop their longest losing
streak of the season at three games. The rare Thursday night contest in Athens
means the first 48-hour turnaround for any Georgia
team during regular-season SEC play since 1998. Georgia
defeated the Gamecocks 64-61 in overtime in the two teams’ first meeting on
Jan. 14 on Columbia. It marked the
Bulldogs’ only overtime game this season and first road win in the SEC in two
years. Since South Carolina
joined the SEC in time for the 1992 season, USC holds a 16-14 edge in games
against Georgia.

Fairfield-Manhattan

Press Notes

Fairfield
looks to win its second straight MAAC game, coming
off a 109-108 win over Saint Peter’s on February 14.

Samford-Missouri
State

Press Notes

With two games remaining in league play, Samford is 6-2 on the road against conference foes and will
complete its regular-season schedule at Eastern Illinois
on Saturday. Southeast
Missouri
(6-19,
3-15 OVC)
heads into Thursday’s game boasting
the services of the conference’s top scorer in senior Roy Booker. Southeast
Missouri
has played some of its best games at home this season and
recorded four of its six victories at the Show Me Center. Samford
owns an impressive 5-1 all-time record against Southeast Missouri.

Ole Miss-Kentucky

Press Notes

Ole Miss hits the road for the second consecutive game,
traveling to Kentucky to take on
the Wildcats. Kentucky sits third
in the SEC Eastern Division standings and has taken its last two games,
including Saturday’s 79-66 road win at South Carolina.
Tubby Smith’s Wildcats have a trio of sophomores leading the team in scoring
and currently coming off the bench. After being suspended for the entire
non-conference slate, forward Randolph Morris is posting 12.8 points and 5.8
rebounds since rejoining the squad and leads the SEC in field goal percentage
in league play (.611).

Utah-UNLV

Press Notes

The Runnin’ Utes (12-12, 5-8 MWC) open a two-game road swing against the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels (14-10, 8-4 MWC).  Utah,
tied for sixth place in the Mountain West Conference, dropped a pair of games
at home last week. The Utes pushed Colorado
State
to overtime before falling
69-61 on Wednesday night, then lost to Air Force 52-51
on Saturday night. Utah is 3-6 on
opponents’ home courts overall this season and 2-4 in Mountain West Conference
play. Over the last seven games, Utah
has held its opponents to an average of 59.7 points per game on 39.6 percent
shooting from the field and 33.3 percent from three-point range. The Utes have
owned a 34.7 to 28.1 edge in rebounds per game, outworking all seven teams on
the glass.  Utah
is playing one redshirt freshman and four other newcomers. Through 24 games,
56.9 percent of the Utes’ points, 47.2 percent of their rebounds, 51.9 percent
of their assists, and 54.1 percent of their minutes played have come from the
first-year players. UNLV is 14-10 overall and tied
for third place in the Mountain West Conference with an 8-4 record. The Rebels
are 10-4 at home overall this season and 4-2 in conference games. The Runnin’ Rebels ended a two-game losing steak with an 80-72
win at Colorado State
last Saturday afternoon. Before then, UNLV lost at BYU (75-72) on Feb. 11 and to San Diego State at home
(81-70) on Feb. 16.

TCU-Colorado
State

Press Notes

Colorado State
finishes out a two-game homestand Wednesday night
against the TCU Horned Frogs. The Rams suffered an
80-72 setback Saturday night against UNLV and are now
13-12 on the year overall. The Horned Frogs bring a 5-21 record into Moby Arena
on Wednesday with their only conference victory (1-11) coming at the Rams’ expense, 85-72 in Fort Worth
on Jan. 21. Colorado State
holds an all-time record of 414-164 (.716) in Moby Arena. The Rams hold an 9-33 record in the month of February during Dale Layer’s
tenure as head coach. The Rams have a 4-22 record in February in their last
three-plus seasons. CSU snapped a 20-game league road
losing streak with last Wednesday’s win over
Utah in Salt
Lake City
. After
holding opponents to a .379 field goal percentage in non-conference games, CSU
has allowed league opponents to shoot at a .493 clip after 12 MWC games. MWC foes are scoring
77.7 points per game on the Rams compared to a 67.0
points per game average in non-conference play.

Ohio State-Michigan

Press Notes

Michigan State
owns the all-time series lead with a record of 59-46 vs. the Buckeyes. Ohio
State
is 13-38 in games played in East
Lansing
. The Buckeyes are 32-21 in games played in Columbus.

Tennessee-Florida

Press Notes

Tennessee
will hit the road for the fourth time in its last five games. The Florida
game will mark the fourth consecutive road game the Vols
have played that has been sold out. UT also played before sold out arenas at Kentucky,

Rutgers-Georgetown

Press Notes

Georgetown put together its second seven-game winning streak
of the season from Jan. 17-Feb. 9, but the Hoyas then
hit a rough stretch of their schedule and suffered consecutive losses to
then-No. 9 West
Virginia
, Marquette and
then-No.
4 Villanova.The Hoyas
last three games aren’t nearly as tough, as they’ll face Rutgers
(15-11, 5-8) and Syracuse at home,
followed by South Florida on the road. With victories
over No. 1 Duke and No. 9 Pittsburgh this season, one or two more wins could be
enough to get the Hoyas into the NCAAs.
After losing six of seven games over a three-week stretch, Rutgers
has won two of its last three. The Scarlet Knights are coming off a 65-51
victory over South Florida on Saturday. On Saturday, Douby sparked a 17-4 run that put Rutgers
ahead 35-21 at halftime. The Scarlet Knights went on to deal South
Florida
its school-record 14th consecutive loss. The Scarlet Knights will face a much tougher test against Georgetown, having dropped five of the last six meetings.

Fordham-St. Joseph’s

Press Notes

The Saint Joseph’s
men’s basketball team will play back-to-back games at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse for the first time this season, beginning with
Wednesday’s (Feb. 22) game with Fordham. The Hawks are 2-3 this season in the Fieldhouse and will be looking to avoid a sub-.500 record
on their homecourt, something which hasn’t happened since 1997-98. Entering
this season, the Hawks owned a 30-2 record in the building since 2002-03, and
that record is now 32-5.

NBA

Sonics-Hawks

Associated Press

Seattle has
won four straight meetings between the teams and eight of its last 10 in Atlanta.
But the seven-game skid is the Sonics‘ longest since
they lost eight in a row on the road from Nov. 24-Dec. 22, 1991. Seattle’s
Rashard Lewis is questionable.
