tonight in the second round of the National Invitational Tournament. The
Bearcats have shown resilience this year, bouncing back after losing five of
six games to finish 8-8 in their first Big East Conference season. They
finished the regular season with a home victory over West Virginia and were on
their way to beating Syracuse in the first round of the Big East tournament
before Gerry McNamara foiled them with a last-second three-pointer. The loss to
Syracuse probably cost the Bearcats
a chance at an NCAA tournament at-large bid. Having gone over the possibilities
in his head several times in the past week, Kennedy can’t understand why Cincinnati’s
resume wasn’t good enough. The Bearcats had a strength of schedule in the top
five and a top 40 Ratings Percentage Index.

on Friday. With Knight out, the Bobcats figure to move rookie Raymond Felton to the point and start Kareem Rush at shooting guard.

As horrid as Portland
is, they are somewhat competitive at home and in fact do have a better SU home
record than Milwaukee does on the
road. Also as per playing in a tougher conference the accurate strength of
schedule ratings from Foxsheets has the Blazers rated higher.  Likewise the Massey Rankings to which we
think are excellent have Portland
with the 7^th toughest schedule but Milwaukee
at No. 27, so Portland’s edge in
location comparison (home team’s home stats, road team’s road stats) make the
home dog the play.

Our official outlaw line is only 1’, so the two point
difference is significant. The official outlaw line is what the odds would be
if there was no consideration given to public perception and balancing the
action.  It is the more accurate line
from the standpoint of the bettor.

The Monarchs won their NIT opening round game at Colorado,
79-61.  They’ve played a MAAC team this year. ODU defeated
Marist, 84-71 in a “Bracketbusters” game on ESPN2 on
Feb. 18^th at ODU.

Notre Dame advanced to the second round of the NIT on
Wednesday night with a 79-69 win over Vanderbilt.The
Wolverines and Fighting Irish will be meeting for the second time this season. Michigan
defeated Notre Dame 71-67 back in December.

When the Cougars hit town Sunday for tonight’s NIT
second-round game against Missouri State,
coach Tom Penders and his players were greeted with
the following headline in the local newspaper: “MVC
basher Penders up next for Bears.” The MVC is, of course, the Missouri Valley Conference, which
placed four teams in the NCAA Tournament. It’s also home to the Bears, who also
felt insulted when the NCAA Tournament selection committee deemed them not
worthy of the big stage and relegated them to the off-Broadway production that
is the NIT. The Cougars knocked off BYU 77-67 in the
first round, forcing 25 turn-overs (18 steals). The
Bears, who drilled Stanford 76-67 in their first game, are a balanced team.

Detroit News

The Hawks have won four times in their last 10 games, but
they are a young, struggling team. The Hawks have some talent and a lot of
fight in them, and if you give them confidence or let them hang around, that
fight grows. It’s best to clamp down early. The Pistons found that out once
this season, when the Hawks hung around and won a close game in Atlanta,
99-98. But overall, Detroit is 2-1
against Atlanta, and if the Pistons
rediscover their defense, they should coast. So far in March, the Pistons have
played only two teams over .500: the Denver Nuggets, leaders of the Northwest
Division, and the Washington Wizards, who are three games above the mark.
Despite that lackluster lineup of opponents, the Pistons are just 5-4 this
month, and they lost both of their games against the over-.500 teams. The
parade of substandard opponents continues tonight as the Atlanta Hawks visit
the Palace.

win in the first round. If Winthrop
hadn’t gagged down the stretch, the Eagles would be here. It’s vital for Tennessee
that the backcourt duo of C.J. Watson and Chris
Lofton produce offensively. Wichita State
hammered Seton Hall in the first round – and Seton Hall has serviceable big
men.

Indiana
advanced simply because San Diego State
made more stupid mistakes in the first round than the Hoosiers. That said, Indiana can
win this game simply because Gonzaga is horrible defensively. Expect a game in
the 80s or even 90s, as Indiana
is going to have all sorts of trouble stopping Gonzaga’s
offense, too. Adam Morrison has to be salivating at the thought of going
against IU. Then again, that’s probably the same
thing IU big man Marco Killingsworth
is doing.

Boston College-Montana

The Boston College
Eagles don’t need much of a sense of history to know that they can’t take 12^th-seeded
Montana lightly in Saturday’s second-round match-up in Salt Lake City, Utah.
They have to look no further in the rear-view mirror than yesterday. On at
least two occasions in overtime, 13^th-seeded Pacific looked like a
sure bet to end B.C.’s season prematurely. So this year’s Eagles already know
all about how tough a double-digit seed can be.
