NFL Picks and Predictions: Packers-Brown Pick and Preseason QB Rotations

The Cleveland Browns take on the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night. The pick on the game is to go over the total of 35.

Though we’ve written many articles documenting how “quarterback battles” are overrated from a standpoint of preseason NFL handicapping, it’s because gamblers use inductive not deductive reasoning.

Generally quarterback competitions are a result of a team having nobody step up and look like an NFL starter, but the Browns battle is among two guys: Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson, who can play in this league.

Head coach Eric Mangini said there will be no rotating in the regular season, so a clear-cut No. 1 job is up for grabs.

Yes, we are concerned about the Browns lack of receiving depth, but Green Bay is unsettled on defense.

The Packers new 3-4 scheme under first-year defensive coordinator Dom Capers will debut and it is a raw work in progress. Only about “30 percent” of the scheme will be shown tonight.

Green Bay OLB Clay Matthews and Jeremy Thompson are doubtful. In fact, the Pack will be minus several first and second team defenders. Their linebacking corps is especially thin.

This is the perfect chance for Cleveland to open it up and with the low total, the over screams at us.

More notes for bettors Saturday:

·        Detroit super rookie QB Matt Stafford will enter at some point in the second quarter. Dante Culpepper will start and Drew Stanton will finish, will all three QBs getting about the same amount of playing time.

·        It looks like four Falcons quarterbacks will play about a quarter reach: Matt Ryan, Chris Redman, D.J. Shockley, and rookie John Parker Wilson. The battle for No. 2 QB behind Ryan is wide open.

·        Titans starters will play one more series than last week and and backup QB Vince Young will make his first appearance at home since his infamous meltdown last year that cost him his starting job. He will play about a half.

·        For Tampa, Luke McCown will start at QB, followed by Byron Leftwich. Each will play 12-15 snaps.

·        The Houston QB rotation will be starter Matt Schaub in the first quarter, Dan Orlovsky in the second and third and Rex Grossman in the fourth. In fact, that is the exact rotation of all the units. Starters first, second string second and third quarters, and the third string will play the final frame.

NFL Predictions: Packers-Browns Picks Info, Odds, Playing Rotations for Betting

It’s the Green Bay Packers hosting the Cleveland Browns. Here is the official sports betting preview and more betting 411 is in the free pick section of OffshoreInsiders.com.

The sportsbook line is Green Bay -2.5 with a total of 35.

Many NFL gamblers like betting on teams with major quarterback battles in the preseason. Not is more intense than in Cleveland where Derek Anderson is clashing with Brady Quinn. Head coach Eric Mangini said there will be no rotating in the regular season, so a clear-cut No. 1 job is up for grabs. Quinn has the early lead according to all reports.

Mangini is making his Browns debut but of course has head coaching experience. Cleveland has a lot of question marks at WR behind No. 1 wideout Braylon Edwards. Cleveland is working on the no-huddle offense every day in camp.

The Packers new 3-4 scheme under first-year defensive coordinator Dom Capers will debut. Only about “30 percent” of the scheme will be shown tonight.

Green Bay OLB Clay Matthews and Jeremy Thompson are doubtful. In fact, the Pack will be minus several first and second team defenders. Their linebacking corps is especially thin.

Some Packers starters will play 10-12 snaps and several combinations will be used throughout the first quarter.

NFL Preseason Betting Odds: Lions-Falcons QB Rotations, Betting Tips, Odds, Predictions

In the one afternoon game—a 4:00 EST start—the Atlanta Falcons play at the Detroit Lions. Sports Betting Sportsbook has the spread at Detroit -3 with a total of 35.

Detroit‘s Jim Schwartz will be making his coaching debut. Add to that the Lions are coming off an 0-16 season straight up, many would argue if any team desperately needs preseason wins to change the culture, it’s the Lions.

Detroit super rookie QB Matt Stafford will enter at some point in the second quarter. Dante Culpepper will start and Drew Stanton will finish, will all three QBs getting about the same amount of playing time.

Atlanta Pro Bowler Roddy White finally ended his holdout and starting practicing Monday. White says he wants to play in this game, and Atlanta could use him. Up-and-coming receiver Harry Douglas is out for the year. Atlanta‘s three best receivers behind White are Michael Jenkins, Eric Weems who has one career catch, and Brian Finneran, who hasn’t started a game since 2005.

Lions DE Jared DeVries, who started 29 games the last three years, is out for the year. Star wide receiver Calvin Johnson is questionable with a jammed thumb. He will participate in pregame warm-ups before deciding whether to play.

It looks like four Falcons quarterbacks will play about a quarter reach: Matt Ryan, Chris Redman, D.J. Shockley, and rookie John Parker Wilson. The battle for No. 2 QB behind Ryan is wide open.

This game will be televised on the NFL Network. To listen to the broadcast of this and all NFL games on Sirius Satellite Radio or buy tickets, check out the Guy Store

NFL Betting – How Does Michael Vick Affect the Eagles Odds?

The big news in NFL betting circles is, of course, Michael Vick signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. The big question is: will his signing have an impact on the team at all and, if it does, how significant will that impact be?

While nothing is guaranteed, anyone betting online and wondering about Philly’s prospects this season should consider the following factors:

Vick’s emotional impact on the team. It’s possible that he’ll “inspire” his teammates, but I doubt it. Andy Reid is a good coach for Vick but the bottom line is that Philadelphia is an unbelievably tough city to play in for any athlete. For all we know, Vick could get booed off the field the moment he touches the ball, and that wouldn’t be good for team morale. Also, rumors are already flying that Donovan McNabb is unhappy with the signing, so the overall effect on team chemistry doesn’t project to be a positive one.

Vick’s role in possible trick plays. Vick has no chance to start at quarterback right now but Andy Reid is known for throwing the ball a ton and taking risks. You can bet that the Eagles will draw up some wildcat-type formations to use Vick as a thrower, receiver and runner, possibly like what the Vikings intend to do with Percy Harvin. It will still take time for Vick to learn the offense and get into football shape, so I doubt he’ll have a big impact until late in the season (after his suspension ends, assuming it isn’t uplifted).

Vicks role as a backup quarterback. It appears the Eagles either think Kevin Kolb’s injury is serious or have lost confidence in him. Vick should become the No. 2 behind McNabb and, while it seems like McNabb’s hold on the job is safe, sports picks fans quickly forget that McNabb was benched for a game last season. I’m betting management isn’t giving McNabb the longest of leashes this season.

The overall outlook is that Vick’s impact should be negligible when you don’t factor in McNabb. His negative effect on team chemistry should counterbalance his possible success in a wildcat offense. If McNabb gets hurt or benched ,however, we’ll have to reassess the Eagles’ odds.

Vikings-Colts Odds, Point Spread Picks, NFL Injuries, QB Rotations

It’s a meteor shower of betting odds information for the NFL preseason and now the top NFL handicappers look at the Minnesota Vikings and Indianapolis Colts.

The Vikings have a major QB battle as Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson, two mistake prone signal callers will contend. Rosenfels gets the start tonight. Jackson follows and John David Booty will follow.

Totals bettors note that head coach Brad Childress says he wants the QBs to manage the game and cut down on turnovers.

Colts head coach Jim Caldwell will be making his debut. Indianapolis LT Tony Ugoh should have a chip on his shoulder. He started 23 games the last two years, but lost his starting job.

Indianapolis starting QB Peyton Manning will get little playing time, backup Jim Sorgi is out meaning rookie QB Curtis Painter will see significant playing time. Head coach Caldwell said he has not decided on how long front line players will play, though all indications are that no key players will play more than a few series and less than one quarter.

Colts stud TE Dallas Clark is out. Their best defensive player Bob Sanders will miss the preseason. Starting RT Ryan Diem is out. BetUs Sportsbook has Minnesota -2 with a total of 36.

For the here and now presented is the official betting preview of the Broncos-49ers on the NFL Network. The NFL betting line is San Francisco -2.5 with a total of 24 at BetED.

Top draft WR Michael Crabtree is a holdout for the Niners. Denver head coach Josh McDaniels is making his debut and will be breaking in a new offense with the departure of disgruntled signal caller Jay Cutler.

McDaniels has told his starters and draft picks to expect to “play deep” into tonight’s game. Extremely rare for preseason, he has a full-fledged game plan and scouting report. He even cancelled practice to go over the scouting report and game plan.

San Francisco has a major QB battle between Shaun Hill and Alex Smith. Shaun Hill gets the nod here. The two have played evenly though in training camp. The flow of the game will determine when Smith comes in. Rookie Nate Davis may get a few snaps.

San Francisco is working on the Taser, their version of the Wildcat. They have three former college QBs playing other positions, so things could get fancy tonight.

Bob Warner of NFL betting blog Lines-Maker.com said that reports are that Smith has matured and relaxed. “Look for his coming out party Thursday night,” the betting guru promises.

RB Frank Gore and WR Isaac Bruce, two starters are out for San Francisco. Starting LG David Baas is also out.

Denver‘s defensive coordinator Mike Nolan was the Niners head coach until he was fired late last year.

Broncos running back LaMont Jordan is out and oft-injured Ryan Torain was cut. Rookie sensation Knowshon Moreno is expected to get extended playing time. Denver S Brian Dawkins is not expected to play.

Rams-Jets QB Rotations, Picks, Odds, and Betting Preview

The Michael Vick press conference may be the big story for the Philadelphia newspapers, but winning NFL picks is what OffshoreInsiders.com and Lines-Maker.com are about.

As the NFL handicappers research every form of the media for late breaking information in winning preseason NFL selections, it’s tough not to get caught up with the Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News, 610 WIP, and ESPN Radio Philadelphia, though it wasn’t until Jody McDonald and his milk toast co-host Harry Mays came on that they finally went local.

Here is the official NFL betting odds preview of the Rams-Jets.

Two coaches are making their debut: Rex Ryan for the Jets and Steve Spagnuolo for the Rams.

The Jets will be without four starters: five starters LG Alan Faneca, C Nick Mangold, RT Damien Woody, CB Darrelle Revis and NT Kris Jenkins.

The Rams No. 1 WR Donnie Avery is out. He caught 53 passes as a rookie last year. They have very little proven talent at WR. They have nine receivers battling for spots behind Avery. Combined, they caught 43 passes for 524 years last year.

The Rams are also installing the West Coast offense under new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, so the injury to Avery is a major one. Starting QB Marc Bulger, coming off missing a good part of last year because of injuries, will play the entire first quarter and perhaps part of the second.

The Jets will start Kellen Clemens at QB, but he will give way to rookie sensation Mark Sanchez as coach Ryan wants both signal callers to work with the first team. Look for rookie Erik Ainge to get a majority of the playing time behind center and Harvard’s Chris Pizzotti will get some mop up duty.

Senior Handicapper Stevie Vincent of OffshoreInsiders.com has said that Sanchez has looked very sharp in training camp and will likely win the job. Two receivers, Jerricho Cotchery and Chansi Stuckey have looked extremely impressive in camp for the Jets reports Vincent.

The defense has also dominated in training camp for the J-E-T-S.
