NASCAR Betting – Johnson Trumps All At The Glen

NFL betting players who are revving up for the new season can warm up with some action on the racetrack, as the Sprint Cup series heads to Watkins Glen for the Heluva Good Sour Cream Dips at The Glen, which was won by Kyle Busch last year. This year’s winner is a driver that usually doesn’t offer good value, and he’ll get his first win on a road course.

Watkins Glen Odds – Sunday, August 9, 1:00 PM ET

Tony Stewart (+450) and Jeff Gordon (+600) top all active drivers with four wins apiece at The Glen, but Stewart may be a better bet right now because of two reasons: Gordon hasn’t won here since 2001, and Stewart has reeled off an amazing nine top-10s in a row. Also, in the last two road races at The Glen and Sonoma, Stewart has finished second each time.

Marcos Ambrose (+600) and Juan Pablo Montoya (+700) grew up racing sports and open-wheel cars on road courses, so they’ll definitely be in the mix. Ambrose won last year’s Nationwide race at The Glen and finished third in the Sprint Cup race at Sonoma in June. Montoya’s won one race in his Cup career, and that came at Sonoma in 2007. These guys are always a threat when NASCAR turns right, so look for them near the top of your offshore sportsbook.

Kyle Busch (+700) is the defending race-winner and is capable of going on a run, but he’s got only two top-10s in his last 10 races and is outside of the Chase cutoff. A better bet would be JGR teammate Denny Hamlin (+1500), who is coming off an emotional Pocono win, and he’s run inside the top 10 in all three of his trips to The Glen. Betting management players, he’s your man.

How often do you get three-time defending series champion Jimmie Johnson at +2000? For that reason alone, you should bet on him. Johnson’s never been known to do well on road courses, but he has four top-10s in seven races at The Glen, including a seventh-place run last year, and he came in fourth at Sonoma in June. This race was won by Kasey Kahne, who was a surprise, and Johnson would also be a surprise to some. I say it’s only a matter of time, and that time is now. Put Jimmie Johnson in your sports picks on Sunday.

Now here are some betting previews for tonight courtesy of super sportsbook Bodog, starting out the Mets-Cardinals.

Albert Pujols and the St. Louis Cardinals open a two-game set against the New York Mets at Citi Field tonight.

Pujols is batting .226 with two homers and five RBIs in 16 games since appearing in his eighth All-Star game July 14. The first baseman hasn’t hit a homer since connecting for two in a 6-1 win over Arizona on July 17 in the first game following the mid-season break.

Pujols’ struggles continued over the weekend, going 0 for 9 as the Cardinals took two of three against Houston to conclude a 5-2 homestand.

He may have trouble breaking out against Johan Santana, who has won both of his starts against the Cardinals this year.

Santana is 3-0 with an 0.43 ERA in his last three home starts.

The Cardinals will counter with Joel Pineiro, who is 3-0 with a 2.91 ERA in five starts against the Mets.

Bodog also previews the Cubs-Reds.

Tom Gorzelanny looks to help the Chicago Cubs continue their second-half surge when he makes his Chicago debut to night against the free-falling Cincinnati Reds.

After stumbling through the first half of the season, the Cubs have gone 20-10 since July 1 and an NL-best 13-5 since the All-Star break to move one percentage point ahead of St. Louis in the Central.

Chicago is hoping Gorzelanny can regain the form he had in 2007, when he went 14-10 with a 3.88 ERA in 32 starts for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

In five career starts versus Cincinnati, Gorzelanny is 2-2 with a 7.54 ERA.

Johnny Cueto, who will start for the Reds, has been in the middle of Cincinnati’s slide and hopes August goes a bit smoother than July.

Cueto had both the majors’ worst ERA and opponents’ batting average last month.

Onward to the Dodgers-Brewers. After dropping the opener, Manny Ramirez and the Los Angeles Dodgers look to avoid another loss to the Milwaukee Brewers tonight when the clubs continue a three-game series.

Ramirez went 1 for 5 in Los Angeles’ 6-5 loss to Milwaukee on Monday, flying out to right with the bases loaded in the ninth after the Dodgers had fought back from a five-run deficit.

The Dodgers, who still have the best record in the majors, are 4-7 since a July 22 win over the Reds, although Ramirez’s slump may not be the biggest problem since Los Angeles is still averaging 6.1 runs and hitting .306 over those 11 games.

Hiroki Kuroda, who will pitch for the Dodgers, remains winless since beating San Diego on July 3.

Milwaukee, which hasn’t won three in a row since June 15-17, will hand the ball to Yovani Gallardo, who is looking to win his third straight start.

Before a four-game series against the AL East leading New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox have two games in a ballpark where they have struggled immensely. However, they take some momentum into the first one against the Tampa Bay Rays tonight.

The Red Sox are 4-6 against the Rays and have lost three of four in St. Petersburg, where they have won just twice in their last 14 regular-season games. They did win two at Tropicana Field in last year’s AL championship series but also lost two, including Game 7.

See football bettors version of the cash for clunkers program!

Boston’s Jon Lester will be opposed by Matt Garza in a rematch of the ALCS Game 7.

Lester had an 0.90 ERA in winning all three regular-season starts versus the Rays in 2008, but recorded a 4.97 ERA in losing both outings against them in the ALCS.

Garza is 2-0 with a 1.66 ERA in three outings against the BoSox this year.

America’s only Grandmaster sports handicapper Joe Duffy is not the only person unloading on tonight’s card among top handicappers.

Simply put, the Great One Stevie Vincent is having the greatest 3.5 year start that any public handicapper has ever had. He just wins in every sport. Today is the National League O/U of the QUARTER CENTURY among two Level 5 over/under plays. Click now to purchase Stevie’s best bets for tonight.

Yovani Gallardo (10-7, 3.13 ERA) will take the hill for the Brewers in that contest; the righthander has won two straight starts. The Dodgers will counter with righthander Hiroki Kuroda (3-5, 4.44 ERA), who last picked up a victory on July 3.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The WNBA returns to action on Tuesday night with three games on the schedule: San Antonio at Los Angeles, New York at Detroit, and Phoenix at Seattle. The Mercury and Storm hold down the top two records in the Western Conference heading into their Tuesday matchup, with Phoenix at 15-6 (15-6 against-the-spread) and Seattle at 12-7 (9-10 against-the-spread). Those two teams last met back on July 1, with the Mercury pulling out a 93-81 home victory in that contest.
