North Carolina vs. Connecticut

Handicapping notes: Connecticut QB Zach Frazier has thrown nine interceptions in his last four games, including three last week at Ohio. North Carolina has nine starters back from a team that crushed UConn last year 38-12. They held The Citadel to just 150 total years last week, making 10 tackles for losses.

Huskies LB Scott Lutrus is “50-50” for this game. He led them in tackles last year and has started 26 straight games. Head coach Randy Edsall has several times called him the “most indispensable player” on the team.

Connecticut is switching to a no-huddle offense. UNC will be without starting FB Bobby Rome, who has the swine flu. The Tar Heels are 3-7 straight up to the Big East, yet 2-0 to Connecticut.

Against the spread records: The Huskies are 30-14 in nonconference action.

Kansas vs. UTEP

Handicapping notes: Kansas has not won a road nonconference game since 2003. They don’t play another road game until Oct. 17 at Colorado.

UTEP is 3-44 straight up to ranked teams all-time including nine straight losses. They’ve lost 15 straight to current Big 12 teams. Their last win to that conference was 1957.

Kansas will get star WR Dezmon Brisceo back. The junior was suspended for opening week but last year set a school record with 1,407 receiving yards last year.

East Carolina vs. West Virginia

Handicapping notes: This is a huge revenge game for the Mountaineers. Last year WVU was considered a national championship contender until they were humiliated by East Carolina. It’s a circled game as head coach Bill Stewart stressed all offseason why WVU needed to get tougher.

ECU played Appalachian State last week, a team that has a similar offense to WVU. However, East Carolina is much more experienced on the defensive line than West Virginia is on the offensive line.

The Pirates are 0-12 straight up in Morgantown, the last trip resulting in a 48-7 loss.

USC vs. Ohio State

Handicapping notes: USC’s 19 year old freshman QB Matt Barkley gets a huge test playing in the famed Horseshoe. The Buckeyes are 24-1 straight up in noncoference games under Jim Tressel, the only loss to eventual national champion Texas.

USC does have nine offensive starters back including what many rate at the best offensive line in the country. Junior C Kristofer O’Dowd. RB Marc Tyler who has 72 yards and a touchdown in five carries is out, but the Trojans are loaded at RB.
