Meeting up on the diamond . . .

The Giants will send Brad Penny (3-1, 4.01 ERA in the National League) to the mound on Thursday night as they begin a four-game home series against the Cubs. Righthander Penny will be looking to bounce back from an ugly outing against the Dodgers in which he gave up seven runs over just 2 2-3 innings of work. Countering for the Cubs will be Ryan Dempster (10-8, 3.72 ERA). Righthander Dempster held the Cards to one run over eight innings last time out.

Also on the NL schedule for Thursday: Cincinnati at Pittsburgh, Philadelphia at Milwaukee, San Diego at Colorado, and the Dodgers at Washington. Los Angeles will go with Vicente Padilla (3-0, 2.96 ERA in the NL) in that last matchup; righthander Padilla took a no-decision against the Dodgers last time out, allowing four runs over five innings. J.D. Martin (5-4, 4.21 ERA) gets the nod for the Nats; the righthander has picked up the win in each of his last two outings.

Meanwhile, there are just four games on the American League schedule for Thursday, with Texas at Oakland, Seattle at Toronto, Boston at Kansas City, and Detroit at Cleveland. Ace Justin Verlander (16-9, 3.44 ERA) is slated to start for the Tigers; the righthander has surrendered 10 earned runs on 19 hits over his last 14 1-3 innings. The Tribe send Carlos Carrasco (0-2, 9.64 ERA) to the hill; righthander Carrasco has given up 15 earned runs over 14 innings this season.

Rounding out the Roundup . . .

Finally, the last event of the PGA Tour’s FedExCup begins on Thursday, with the top 30 players in the standings competing in The TOUR Championship at East Lake GC in Atlanta. Points leader Tiger Woods is the favorite to win both the tournament and the FedExCup this weekend. Four other players can also claim the FedExCup by winning at East Lake this week – Steve Stricker, Jim Furyk, Zach Johnson, and Heath Slocum. The other golfers will need Woods to stumble.

Football Point Spread Ole Miss vs. South Carolina

It’s Mississippi and South Carolina and here is the preview courtesy of Bodog.

College football betting gets serious in Week 4, as conference play dives headfirst into the deep end.

This week’s action gets started tonight in the SEC, when South Carolina welcomes No. 4 Mississippi to town. Oddsmakers have the Rebels as 4-point chalk for the affair, with the total listed at 53.

South Carolina (+2) upset Ole Miss 31-24 last season at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The loss kept the Rebels from the upper echelon of the national rankings, so they won’t want to make the same mistake again.

2-0 ATS (2-0 SU) this season, Mississippi is 8-1 ATS in its last nine games on the road.

South Carolina bounced back from a loss at Georgia in Week 2 to get past Florida Atlantic 38-16 last week as 20.5-point home faves.

NCAA Football Betting – Hurricanes In For A Wakeup Call

Everyone’s main focus is NFL betting but the college card presents a couple of really good games this weekend. Starting on Thursday, we’ll have an exciting contest between Ole Miss and South Carolina and then on Saturday, there will be a number of feature games in the sportsbook.

One of the games at the top of everyone’s list will be the Miami Hurricanes and Virginia Tech Hokies contest. Very quietly, the ACC has seen a resurgence this year, mostly because of the Miami Hurricanes. The ‘Canes were expected to be a mid-tier ACC outfit and many people pegged them to be 0-4 to start the year, considering their difficult schedule. By the time their through with their first four games, the Hurricanes will have played four consecutive Top 25 teams. So far, so good.

The Hurricanes beat Florida State to start the year and it wasn’t an easy win. That game took place in Talahassee, which is never an easy game for anyone. A lot of people making their sports picks assumed they’d lose that game, then they’d lose the game against Georgia Tech, but it’s been the complete opposite.

The Hurricanes finally look like a strong team, thanks to the quarterbacking of Jacory Harris. We knew the team had talent but they had to get a taste of winning before we could consider them reliable. Now that they’ve done that, everyone is hopping on the bandwagon.

There is no question that the Hurricanes have been impressive this year but let’s be honest, this is not a BCS Championship contender. The Hurricanes are back and they are an ACC contender, but they still have to prove some more before we buy into them.

The Hurricanes are overrated at this point and they are going to get a wakeup call on Saturday. The ACC still goes through Virginia Tech and they are going to learn about that the hard way.

While the Hokies didn’t get pimpslapped by Alabama, they did bounce back with a win at home against Nebraska last week. Their running game offers two dangerous options and Tyrod Taylor is starting to find his groove.

The Hokies are still the best team in the ACC and that will be on display this week. They are a three-point home underdog and they’ll win this contest outright.

Sports betting system picks: Hokies +3
