Saints at Eagles: No chance Kolb can keep up with Brees

New Orleans and Philadelphia each opened their seasons with impressive blowout victories, but the Eagles will have to defend their home turf without quarterback Donovan McNabb, who suffered a rib injury last week.

NFL Picks Spread: Pick ‘em

The Saints absolutely massacred the Lions in a 47-27 Week 1 win. Naturally, the offense was firing on all cylinders. Drew Brees had a mind-numbing game, tossing 358 yards and six scores. He was very democratic with the football, with four players catching at least four passes and five different players hauling in touchdowns. Running back Pierre Thomas missed the game due to injury and Reggie Bush continued to underwhelm as a runner, but former Bronco Mike Bell stepped up in a big way with 143 yards.

Of course, an overpowering offense is nothing new for the Saints. What’s more impressive is an opportunistic defense, something New Orleans has never had during the Drew Brees era. The Saints defense allowed 20 points (another touchdown was scored by Detroit’s “D”) and only 231 yards while producing three turnovers. Exercise some caution if you’re going to be betting online with New Orleans, though—it isn’t difficult to look impressive against Detroit.

The Eagles, meanwhile, had their way with Carolina in a 38-10 rout. There were many concerns at the sportsbook after defensive coordinator Jim Johnson passed away in the offseason—not to mention some injuries and offseason departures—but it didn’t matter last week as Philly delivered seven takeaways while holding the Panthers to a pathetic 169 yards. Carolina quarterback Jake Delhomme was awful, but the Eagles “D” still deserves some credit.

Things aren’t so rosy on offense, as Donovan McNabb was lost to a rib injury during a third-quarter touchdown run. It’s unknown how long McNabb will be down for, but his replacement Kevin Kolb struggled after subbing against the Panthers, going 7-11 for a paltry 23 yards. Recently signed Jeff Garcia will likely see some playing time if Kolb struggles early.

Both teams looked sharp last weekend, but trying to keep up with New Orleans’ offense without McNabb is a recipe for disaster. The Philadelphia running game (185 yards, 5.8 per carry last week) will try carrying the load, but the Saints are bound to cram the box and force Kolb to beat them—and there’s no betting software, casual fan or people in Kolb’s immediate family that believe he can keep up with Brees.

Pick: New Orleans

Here is the betting football tips sheet for games of Saturday, September 19. These are compiled by the Joe Duffy of GodsTips, anchor of OffshoreInsiders.com

USC vs. Washington

It is looking more and more like Southern Cal will start Aaron Corp at QB. It would be his first career start. True freshmen Matt Barkley, who started the first two games, has not thrown all week and is now considered doubtful.

Corp is a better runner and has a strong arm.

Northwestern vs. Syracuse

Non-bettors may call them “moral victories” but professional bettors look for teams that “play well” in losses (or poorly in wins). Syracuse is 0-2 straight up, but has been competitive in both games. Their defense is very good.

The weakness is the defense keeps getting put back on the field, as the Orange is averaging just 2.5 yards per carry.

East Carolina vs. North Carolina

The Pirates leading rusher Dominique Lindsay is doubtful. He has scored two of Bonesville’s three rushing touchdowns.

Middle Tennessee State vs. Maryland

Maryland lost their best cornerback Nolan Carroll for the year. Worst of all, the injury comes at the worst possible time when the Terps face a spread offense, the type they’ve often struggled against. MTSU won 24-14 when the teams met last year.

Also likely out for the Terrapins is S Jamari McCollough and OT Bruce Campbell.

Duke vs. Kansas

Two QBs are no QBs? If one believes that, note that Duke will use both Sean Renfree and Thaddeus Lewis behind center.

Tulsa vs. Oklahoma

Redshirt freshman Landry Jones against starts at QB for the Sooners, replacing Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford.

Nebraska vs. Virginia Tech

The Hokies Lane Stadium is universally accepted as one of the toughest, if not the single most difficult trips for a road team. Nebraska QB Zac Lee will be making his first career road start against a V Tech team that has a 31-game straight up home winning streak against nonconference opponents.

Rice vs. Oklahoma State

The Cowboys must rebound from their devastating loss to Houston. They will likely not have the services of RB Kendall Hunger, who leads the Big 12 in rushing. Rice rotated three QBs last week and is expected to do more of the same here.

Texas Tech vs. Texas

The revenge angle applies here as the Red Raiders knocked Texas out of the National Championship race with the stunning 39-33 victory last year.

Kansas State vs. UCLA

Bruins starting QB Kevin Prince is out. True freshman Richard Brehaut gets the start. Kevin Craft, who started 12 games last year, is still an option.

Vikings vs. Lions Vegas Line, Picks, Game Tickets

It’s the biggest point spread of the week as a rare double digit road favorite applies in NFL betting. In the Vikings vs. Lions contest, Minnesota is a 10-point road favorite. The top football handicapper in history, Mike Godsey of GodsTips, anchor of OffshoreInsiders.com reminds that with home field advantage being three-points, this would be the equivalent of Minnesota being a 16 point home chalk.”

The Guy Store has tickets for this game or if you would rather listen to it at home, sign up for the Sirius/XM package and get your FatHeads as well.

Packers vs. Bengals Tickets, Betting Line Odds, Expert Picks Information

The Bengals-Packers NFL betting line has Green Bay -9 with a total of 42. Both are pretty much across the board at most sportsbooks though there is a 42.5 at some Vegas casinos.
