UTEP-Houston OVER 74.5
The Cougars lit up the board last week scoring 68 points and clearly they held back. Houston was led by Conference USA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year Case Keenum. Keenum completed 17 of 22 passes for 254 yards. He threw five touchdown passes, but he was intercepted twice.
Last year they combined for 99 points and both teams are every bit as high octane this season. They average more than 1,000 yards combined on offense in the last five games between the two teams.
The Cougs are a work in progress on the defensive side of the ball. Houston will have a new look on defense as they also start the year with a new defensive coordinator. Houston’s defensive coordinator Brian Stewart spent nine years in the NFL.
The Miners have an all-senior starting offensive line that averages 6-5 and 307 pounds and will have great success against Houston’s feast or famine gambling defense.
MARSHALL +12.5 West Virginia
Remember our Golden Rule: it’s tough to manufacture emotion. It’s one of the biggest games in the history at Marshall.
Marshall is 119-19 straight up at Joan C. Edwards Stadium, although nearly all of those games were against lower-tiered schools.
In its last trip to Huntington in 2007, West Virginia was held to three first downs and 118 total yards in the opening half and trailed 13-6 at halftime.
The underdogs have a big hand up in prepping for their foes. Head coach Doc Holliday was the Mountaineers’ recruiting coordinator the past two seasons. Former WVU offensive graduate assistant JaJuan Seider now is Marshall’s running backs coach and recruiting coordinator, while three ex-graduate assistants at WVU have similar roles at Marshall.
WVU linebacker Pat Lazear, who led the team in tackles, is out.
WVU just wants to win. This game is as big as it gets though for the home double-digit underdog.

HOUSTON -20 utep
It’s a big revenge game for Houston. In the Kevin Sumlin era, the Cougars have played five games against teams they lost to within the last season. The Cougars won all five.
That includes a 17-point win to nationally ranked East Carolina, a team good enough to still win the conference title. To say the least, much better than UTEP.
An aberration? Well the same year, 2008 the Cougars improved to 2-0 against ranked opponents in the Sumlin era with a 70-30 thrashing of the nation’s No. 25 team. The previous November, Tulsa trashed UH, 56-7.
Oklahoma State, 2009 – The Cougars suffered a 56-37 defeat in the second game of the Sumlin era in 2008. UH turned the tables the next season for a 45-35 victory against a fifth-ranked team.
Rice, 2009 – The Cougars had their 2008 C-USA West title hopes dashed in a 56-42 loss at Rice in the regular-season finale. Last Nov. 28, the Cougars cruised to a 73-14 victory.
Okay, these were impressive wins including routs to nationally ranked teams. Three touchdowns is not nearly as much with these offenses.
Those who bet totals always wager with Stevie Vincent as mastering over/under has been his forte for years and no sports handicapper comes close.
